Relation Between Dendrometric Variables and Growth Stress in Eucalyptus

Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify eucalyptus clones for the production of sawed timber based on dendrometric variables and longitudinal residual deformation (LRD), analyzing the correlation between these characteristics. 20 Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla clones with 13 years of age were analyzed. The crown size, diameter at breast height (DBH) and bark thickness were measured. There was a significant difference between the clones for DBH, LRD and bark thickness. There was no significant co… Show more

“…From the 20 hybrid clones, França et al (2017) identified the best clones that were indicated for lumber production using dendrometric parameters and longitudinal residual deformation. With this information, seven hybrid clones were then selected for this study and a total of 42 trees were obtained from the selected Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla hybrid clones (six trees per clone) to evaluate the GSI strain and interlocked grain effect on LES.…”

“…In addition, this sawing method (plain sawing) is the most used in the eucalyptus lumber industry, aiming for superior quality of wood, and greater values in the market. França et al (2017b) detailed the plantation and some dendrometric variables used during the tree selection. Initial moisture content and air drying samples were prepared according to the method proposed by Simpson (1991), as shown in Fig.…”

“…Factors such as species and silvicultural treatments influence growth stresses (Fournier et al 1994, França et al 2017, Gril et al 2017. In addition to these factors, the trees are exposed to various external disturbances that can cause a permanent change in the orientation of the trunk and change the angle or position of the branches, for example, due to soil properties, extreme snow load, and exposure to prevailing strong winds (Archer 1986, Braz et al 2017.…”

“…Also, little is known about the effect of dendrometric variables on growth stresses and, consequently, on wood quality. Some studies have shown a low or even no correlation between the diameter and the height of the trees and growth stresses (Braz et al 2017, França et al 2017.…”
