Show more

“…Therefore, the use of hydrogels may be an alternative for seedlings planted in recovery areas of previously degraded forests, aiding in the success of silvicultural activities (Fonseca et al, 2017). Seedlings of some tree species have shown strong growth responses with hydrogel addition to the soil, including Handroanthus ochraceus (Cham.)…”

“…Tropical regions, particularly the Cerrado ecoregion, are characterized by different vegetation types and climatic seasonality that are caused by water fluctuations, leading to water deficit in certain periods of the year as a consequence of precipitation fluctuations (Fonseca et al, 2017). The low water availability in the soils of the Cerrado region can cause functional and metabolic damage to plants, such as stomatal closure, reduced Rubisco carboxylation efficiency, and increased intercellular CO2 concentration and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby compromising plant photosynthetic capacity and growth (França et al, 2017;Resende et al, 2019).…”

“…The largest Cajanus sp. biomass observed, which did not differ from C. ensiformis (L.) DC and M. pruriens (L.) under hydrogel conditions, may be related to soil water retention with this type of material (Fonseca et al, 2017). This can happen despite the lack of response to the use of hydrogel in other treatments, which can occur in certain edaphoclimatic conditions (Navroski et al, 2014).…”
