Invasive exotic species are problematic to biodiversity conservation. However, the knowledge of exotic invaders in tropical forests remains limited. Lessons from sites elsewhere suggest that the problem could be worse than is known. To increase our understanding of this problem, we surveyed exotic woody plants in Mabira Central Forest Reserve, Uganda. The site has a long history of anthropogenic disturbance.Seven woody exotic species were encountered, three of which had population structures indicative of invasiveness and distributions suggestive of the early stages of invasion. One of these species Senna spectabilis (DC.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby was localised to an 8.6 ha site north of the reserve. Terminalia superba Engl. & Diels occurred mainly in an 8.7 ha patch south of the reserve, while Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.was more widely distributed. T. superba has been reported to be invasive in two other countries, but it is not yet clear whether or not the reported invasions are occurring in protected forests. A. heterophyllus is reported to be invasive in various countries, yet rarely quantitatively demonstrated outside the Brazilian Atlantic forests. S. spectabilis

Artocarpus heterophyllus is an invasive exotic species known for its negative impacts on Brazilian ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution and population structure of A. heterophyllus in the plant community of a forest fragment in the Amazon. Individuals of this species were subject to active search at Sumaúma State Park, in Manaus, and two plots were delimited, where these individuals were counted. In each plot, the jackfruit tree individual with the largest Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) was centralized, and from it, native species were inventoried. The parameters of relative density, relative dominance and the importance value index were estimated. Jackfruit tree individuals in the plots had grouped distribution and their number in plots 1 and 2 was 308 and 872 individuals, respectively. In quadrant 1, 254 jackfruit trees and 118 native individuals were recorded, and in quadrant 2, 629 jackfruit and 130 native individuals. The jackfruit tree reached indices higher than the sum of the phytosociological indices of all native species. Jackfruit tree distribution was considered similar to that occurring in other already invaded areas of Brazil, which may indicate that the same impacts may occur in Amazonian ecosystems.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened tropical forests in the world, being drastically reduced, fragmented and disturbed. The drastic process of anthropic occupation and exploitation of this biome has, in many cases, led to the introduction of exotic species, such as the jackfruits (Artocarpus heterophyllus). However, studies on the in uence of jackfruits on the native biota are still scarce. Here we investigated the in uence of fruit trees on the seed rain and early recruitment of seedlings in native remnants, comparing these patterns with those observed for a native species tapirira (Tapirira guianensis), which similarly to jackfruits, produces many fruits thruought the year, attracting a variety of frugivore species. Seed rain and seedlings observed under the jackfruits were both more abundant and equally rich to the assemblages reported under the native tapirira trees. In both species, co-speci cs comprise a large part of the number of seeds (> 70%) and seedlings (> 45%) individuals and, although they attract similar seed assemblages, seedling composition diverge, particularly when co-speci cs are excluded. We reported that jackfruits can attract a diverse seed and seedling assemblages, and we nd no evidence that the presence of jackfruits negatively affects the arrival and initial recruitment of native plant species in the study area. These results should be analysed with caution but considered when evaluating costs and bene ts of management options to control exotic species.
