Technological Feasibility of Hovenia dulcis thunb. Species for the Production of Edge Glued Panels

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the use of Hovenia dulcis wood to produce Edge Glued Panels -EGP. To this end, joints with dimensions of 5.0 × 31.0 × 2.5 cm (Width × Length × Thickness) were put together using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI) adhesives at a spread rate of 200 g.m-2 and the chemical characterization of the wood was performed. The strength of glued joints was evaluated through shear tests based on the procedures described by established standards. The results showed tha… Show more

“…Plaster et al (2012), using Eucalyptus urograndis wood and the PVAc and RF adhesives, found a lower performance for the shear strength in the glue line (11.33 MPa) with the use of PVAc when compared with H. dulcis wood without thermal treatment and higher when compared with the thermorectified H. dulcis wood. Marchesan et al (2018) in a study on the production of EGP with the H. dulcis wood, found shear values in the dry pretreatment for the PVAc and EPI adhesives of 6.33 and 12.60 MPa, respectively. It is noted that the PVAc adhesive showed a lower value than that found in the present study, while the EPI showed a similar value.…”
