The phylum Arthropoda is one of the most diverse groups under the terrestrial surface comprising different classes of insects that occupy different environments. Some groups have a close relationship with the habitat they occupy, responding significantly to changes in the environment, thus indicating the level of change in the environment by their presence or absence. The present study aimed to demonstrate the importance of edaphic fauna as a bioindicator of environmental quality. This is a bibliographic review based on specialized consultation of scientific articles in the databases Google Scholar, SciELO-Scientific Electronic Library and ResearchGate. The studies found that environmental quality can be measured from the diversity and abundance of arthropods that live and perform their functions in the soil. Macrofauna influences important soil chemical and physical processes such as nutrient cycling, structuring and homogenization, and increased productivity, among others. The mesofauna, besides acting on soil properties, acts on the regulation of microbial populations, is sensitive to changes and responds promptly. The groups Acari, Collembola, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Araneae are indicated in several studies as potential bioindicators because they are commonly sampled in different environments. The factors identified as conditioning factors of the presence of these groups are environmental heterogeneity, type of vegetation cover and availability of litter, applied management system, seasonality, soil characteristics, and anthropic activities, among others. In short, because they respond quickly, the changes are considered to be efficient biological indicators; therefore, knowing the diversity of species and their degree of interaction with the environment allows us to analyze the effects of anthropic modifications in ecosystems.Resumo: O filo Arthropoda é um dos grupos mais diversos da superfície terrestre, compreendendo diferentes classes de insetos que ocupam diversos ambientes. Alguns grupos, entretanto, apresentam relação estreita com o habitat que ocupam, respondendo de forma significativa às modificações no ambiente, o que acaba indicando o nível de alteração desse mesmo ambiente através de sua presença ou ausência. O presente estudo objetivou demonstrar a importância da fauna edáfica como bioindicadora de qualidade ambiental. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica baseada em consulta especializada de artigos científicos nos bancos de dados Google Acadêmico, SciELO-Scientific Eletronic Library e ResearchGate. Os trabalhos encontrados apontaram que a qualidade ambiental pode ser mensurada a partir da diversidade e abundância de artrópodes que vivem e desempenham suas funções no solo. The conversion of natural environments into agricultural areas has led to habitat fragmentation and caused impacts on biological communities. This study evaluated the richness and abundance of ant assemblages from different environments within a small rural property. The study was conducted in December 2015 in the Palma Sola municipality, extreme western region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The sampled environments included a permanent preservation area, a forest fragment, a corn crop, a tobacco crop and a pine reforestation. Pitfall traps and manual collections were used. The observed richness totaled 69 species. Only two species, Camponotus rufipes and Pheidole lignicola, occurred in the five environments sampled. Overall, 65.3% of the variation in ants' occurrence, according to the sampled environments, was explained by the principal component analysis (PCA) components. This study presents new results on the ant diversity from rural areas, and may provide potential subsidies for management and conservation plans.Keywords: agro ecosystems; agrochemicals; ant fauna; conservation; richness. RESUMOA transformação de ambientes naturais em áreas agrícolas vem provocando a fragmentação ambiental e gerando impactos sobre as comunidades de organismos. Este estudo avaliou a riqueza e a abundância das assembleias de formigas de ambientes que compõem uma propriedade rural. O estudo foi conduzido no município de Palma Sola, extremo oeste catarinense, no mês de dezembro de 2015. Os ambientes avaliados foram uma área de preservação permanente, um fragmento florestal, uma lavoura de milho, uma lavoura de tabaco e um reflorestamento de pinus. Foram utilizadas armadilhas de queda e coleta manual. A riqueza amostrada foi de 69 espécies. Apenas duas espécies, Camponotus rufipes e Pheidole lignicola, ocorreram nos cinco ambientes amostrados. Ao todo, 65,3% da variação das ocorrências de formigas segundo os ambientes amostrados foi explicada pelos componentes da análise de componentes principais (ACP). Este estudo apresenta indicativos da diversidade presente em ambientes rurais e pode representar subsídios para planos de manejo e conservação.

A major challenge for global agriculture is the reduction of the environmental impacts caused by meat and dairy production, and the conversion of monocultural pastures to silvopastoral systems has emerged as an important ally in this process. In order to understand the effects of this conversion we analysed 4 years of sampling of the insect fauna from a conventional monocultural pasture and a silvopastoral system in Minas Gerais, Brazil. We aimed to determine whether the changes caused by the conversion affected the abundance, richness and diversity of the insect orders found in the two systems. Total abundance, richness and diversity did not differ between the two systems, but we detected a significant difference in community composition. Several insect orders showed differences in either abundance, richness or diversity between the two systems, and several families of Hymenoptera, which contains pollinators and natural enemies, showed important increases in the silvopasture. Conversion of monocultural pastures to silvopastures can have important consequences on insect fauna involved in essential ecosystem functions, and the implementation of silvopastures at larger scales has the potential to benefit biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service provision at the landscape scale. Bovine livestock is one of the most important sectors of Brazilian agribusiness, and consequently of Brazil's national economy 1. Over 80% of the herd depends on pastures as its major source of food. Pastures are a practical and economically efficient form of producing and offering food to cattle, since they are resistant to fluctuations in grain prices, guaranteeing relatively low costs of production 2,3. An important characteristic of the dynamics of Brazilian pastures has been the substitution of native pastures, composed of native grassland ecosystems in the Cerrado and Pampas, with pastures sown with exotic grass species, especially from the genus Brachiaria, which currently constitute over 50% Brazilian pastures 2. Intensive management of agricultural ecosystems and inappropriate pasture management, such as a lack of nutrient addition, result in the simplification of biological communities, and are the main cause of pasture degradation 4,5. In the search for production systems that minimise the effects of land degradation and increase the profit obtained by farmers, agroforests have emerged as an important alternative 6. Agroforests are increasingly used in Latin America to enhance biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services. The adoption of agroforests in pastures, in the form of silvopastoral systems, creates an environment that buffers temperature extremes and is more comfortable for the animals, reduces erosion from runoff and wind and increases soil biomass, thus contributing to nutrient cycling 7.
