In this study, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and associated factors of community health workers (CHWs) in different urban settings as a contributor to the preparedness of Brazilian primary care for future sanitary emergencies. The sample included 1935 CHWs from 4 state capitals and 4 inland municipalities in northeastern Brazil. Information was collected on QoL (WHOQOL-BREF), work routines, sociodemographics, direct and indirect exposure to violence, general self-efficacy, social support (MSPSS), mental health (SRQ-20) and coronavirus anxiety. The data were subjected to multiple linear regression analysis (α = 5%). In the state capitals, the factors associated with loss of QoL were poor mental health, lack of training, uncertainty about occupational biosafety, and lack of adaptation of services to tend to patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Among the inland municipalities, the main factors were coronavirus anxiety, poor mental health, lack of adaptation of services, lack of training, and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). A high MSPSS (family and friends) score and self-efficacy had positive impacts on QoL in both urban settings. Our results highlight the need for investment in permanent education, PPE, social support, and mental health care for CHWs.

A estomia, também conhecida como “ostomia”, consiste em uma abertura artificial criada cirurgicamente para desviar o fluxo de efluentes para o meio externo. Essa condição afeta a vida dos indivíduos acometidos e requer cuidados na retomada das atividades para evitar complicações relacionadas à cirurgia. O índice de estoma intestinal tem maior taxa de recorrência em homens e está frequentemente associado à violência urbana, acidentes automobilísticos, associados ao uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas, menor procura e utilização dos serviços de Atenção Primária à Saúde para as medidas preventivas, buscando atendimento médico somente quando ocorre agravamento das doenças. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, qualitativo do tipo análise reflexiva, uma revisão narrativa. Desta forma, foram selecionados e analisados artigos publicados nos últimos cincos anos, nos idiomas português e que abordassem o tema, no intuito de adquirir maior aprofundamento e aproximação com o objeto de estudo para subsidiar as reflexões. Foram elaboradas 7 categorias, sendo elas, respectivamente: Cotidiano da pessoa com estomia intestinal; Renda familiar de pessoas com estomia intestinal; Interfaces nutricionais para pessoas com estomias intestinais; Ingesta hídrica da pessoa com estomia intestinal; Tabagismo, estilismo e uso de drogas ilícitas relacionados a pessoa com estomia intestinal; Lazer e vida social da pessoa com estomia intestinal; e Execução de atividades físicas pela pessoa com estomia intestinal. Sendo assim, tem-se como objetivo do estudo os fatores socioeconômicos e culturais da pessoa com estomia intestinal.

Burnout among Brazilian Dentists during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-sectional Study

Background: This article identifies the factors associated with burnout among dentists in the state of Bahia, Brazil, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted between November 2020 and February 2021, of 251 dentists, selected by snowball sampling. Sociodemographic, occupational, and epidemiological information was collected in an electronic form. Burnout was evaluated through the Maslach Burnout Inventory; anxiety through the Beck Anxiety Inventory; and quality of life through the WHOQol-BREF questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used to identify factors associated with variations in levels of the three burnout dimensions. Results: The mean levels of the burnout dimensions were: Emotional Exhaustion: 28.9 ± 8.9 (SD); Depersonalization = 8.2 ± 6.3; and Personal Accomplishment: 28.0 ± 6.2. The proportion of professionals with high Emotional Exhaustion (≥ 30 cut-off score), high Depersonalization (≥ 12 cut-off score), and low Personal Accomplishment (≤ 33 cut-off score) were 43.4%, 26.3% and 81.3%, respectively. Burnout components were associated with high anxiety; lower levels of the physical, psychological, social relations, and environmental dimensions of quality of life; less time working as a dentist; increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic, feeling safe when using personal protective equipment, and support from work fellows. Conclusion: The dentists investigated showed moderate levels of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, and very low levels of Personal Accomplishment. The prevention and mitigation of burnout syndrome among dentists during a pandemic should consider several factors, such as quality of life, amount of time in the profession, use of personal protective equipment, support from fellow dentists, and alcohol consumption.
