The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a public health crisis, with increases in the number of deaths. As a result, the number of bereaved people has increased significantly. In addition, the measures adopted to control the spread of virus have triggered changes in the subjective and collective bereavement experiences. This systematic literature review aims to summarize and reinterpret the results of qualitative studies on the experience of losing family members during the pandemic by a thematic synthesis. The searches were performed in the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and LILACS databases. Among 602 articles identified, 14 were included. Evidence was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. Two descriptive themes related to the objective were elaborated in addition to one analytical theme, namely: “Pandemic grief: lonely and unresolved”. These themes proved to be interrelated and indicate that experiences of loss in this context were negatively impacted by the imperatives of physical distance, restriction of hospital visits, technology-mediated communication, and prohibition or restriction of funerals. These changes resulted in experiences marked by feelings of loneliness and helplessness, which should be considered when planning intervention strategies that favor communication between family members with the afflicted loved one and with the health care team, enabling welcoming and creating alternatives for farewell rituals. The findings may support further research to test intervention protocols, especially to guide public policies and promote psychological support to bereaved family members after their loss.

Background: In January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) «a public health emergency of international concern» owing to the detection of cases and the rapid spread of the disease. Objective: This study aimed at understanding the social representations of COVID-19 among Brazilian elderly women. Method: A total of 100 elderly women selected by convenience sampling, with an average age of 69.24 years old (SD = 6.58), participated in the study. Data were collected online using a sociodemographic questionnaire and a free word association test (FWAT) with the stimulus word «COVID-19.» The responses were examined by prototypical analysis through IRaMuTeQ. Results: The social representations of COVID-19 emphasize death and fear of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Elements associated with measures to contain the virus are also part of the representational field. Conclusions: Understanding social representations of COVID-19 in elderly women may contribute to short- and long-term interventions to reduce the psychosocial consequences of COVID-19 in this age group.

Resumo Neste artigo, analisamos o distanciamento social, principal ação preventiva na pandemia de Covid-19, como fenômeno que ultrapassa sua demarcação como medida sanitária, revelando-se como experiência humana desdobrada em sofrimentos psíquicos diversos, desafiando sob muitas formas o campo da saúde mental. Situamos essa problemática no cenário brasileiro, periférico no capitalismo globalizado, contextualizado na hipermodernidade, no qual sobressai o modo de vida urbano, marcado por desigualdades e produtor de vulnerabilidades que se evidenciam no combate à pandemia, expressandose em sofrimentos e transtornos que desafiam o campo da saúde mental coletiva. Apontamos reflexões e subsídios para a ampliação desse campo, sob uma perspectiva crítica e complexa, concernentes à produção de conhecimentos e do cuidado, focalizando a urbanidade como dimensão analítica central na compreensão do distanciamento. Ilustramos com alguns desafios e também possibilidades de reinvenção em saúde mental, no contexto da pandemia de Covid-19, focalizando tanto ações voltadas à esfera coletiva, em escala macro, na rede pública de saúde, como nos encontros constitutivos do processo de cuidado, buscando subsidiar uma clínica ampliada nesse contexto.
