Evidence in Orthodontics related to qualitative research

Abstract: Introduction: Research in Orthodontics has historically followed the positivist model based on the direct relationship of cause and effect between diseases and their specific etiological factors. Despite the objectivity and the great potential of statistical procedures, quantitative methods have progressively been sharing space with other models that can encompass the multiplicity of factors that affect the health-disease process, which until such time was reduced to its biological dimension. Objectives: This … Show more

“…Most of the studies were from Europe, in particular the United Kingdom, concluding that qualitative research offers new opportunities for orthodontics studies and can be used exclusively or as a complement in relation to quantitative methods. 2 The validity and reliability of the instrument (IOTN-AC) according to the bibliography shows an inter-examiner correlation of 86.4% and an intraexaminer correlation of 93% , which shows very good agreement, 9-10 results similar to those observed in the calibration of the present study, indicative of the reliability of the instrument applied.…”

“…1 The clinical interventions of these alterations are basically centered around cause and effect, and the specific etiological factors that can cause structural and physiological changes in the stomatognathic system, focused mainly on reparative treatment in its biological aspect, improving the indices of oral health, function and aesthetics often without considering the patient's perception of the treatments, expectations and perceptions. 2 There is no doubt that in order to understand the multifactor phenomenon of malocclusions, the social background and myriad of stimuli must be integrated that can be interpreted by the diversity of individuals influenced by behavioral, emotional and psychosocial aspects that have been gaining in relevance in society, in particular due to their aesthetic implications and the self-perception of image.…”

“…The recent increase in interest in qualitative methods and patient related outcomes in orthodontics ( 160 , 161 ) is in line with the qualitative approach that is core to the scoping review methodology ( 15 , 161 ). In this process, a broad sweep of the literature is reviewed in a systematic manner to give better understanding of key or new concepts.…”

“…This study employed a qualitative research approach, as it is suitable in exploring perceptions of participants toward orthodontic treatment. [ 9 ] Dental undergraduates at the Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University, Thailand who were requesting orthodontic retreatment were selected using a purposeful sampling, considering sex and year of study. This technique allowed the researchers to recruit participants who were able to provide in-depth information about the phenomenon inspected in this study.…”

“…In addition, those dental students who request orthodontic retreatment may have different reasons and levels of expectation for the retreatment. However, although qualitative studies regarding orthodontic treatment currently appear to be increasing,[ 9 ] there has been a scarce of literature regarding perceptions toward orthodontic retreatments, especially among dental students. Consequently, this study was conducted to explore perceptions of Mahidol dental undergraduates who were requesting orthodontic retreatment and to examine whether there are any influential factors in a dental school toward a decision to receive the retreatment.…”
