Objective: To analyze the article type, origin, main affiliation, number of publications, authors, and affiliations of six orthodontic journals during two intervals of 5 years each (2006-2010 and 2011-2015). Methods:In total, 4879 articles examined in this study were screened online at the individual journal's website. The types of articles and their authorship characteristics in the six orthodontic journals [three journals indexed by Science Citation Index (SCI) and the others indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)] were recorded. Parameters were tested using the Pearson chi-square for independence at a 0.05 level of significance.Results: Among all the article types, research articles were the most published in the orthodontic journals indexed by SCI and SCIE in the first (2006-2010; 88.1% and 77.6%, respectively) and second periods (2011-2015; 84.4% and 74.6%, respectively). In the first and second intervals, the European Union was the most common origin among articles accepted by the journals listed in SCI (30.1% and 29.2% respectively), whereas Asia/Oceania was the common origin among articles accepted by the journals listed in SCIE (44.1% and 43.4%, respectively). Conclusion:The articles published in the orthodontics journals listed under SCI and SCIE for 2006-2010 were significantly different in terms of numbers and characteristics.

RESUMENObjetivo: realizar un análisis bibliométrico de todos los artículos publicados en Ustasalud desde el segundo semestre de 2002 hasta el primero de 2014. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un análisis bibliométrico descriptivo que incluyó la totalidad de artículos publicados en los 24 núme-ros que fueron revisados en físico. Se determinó el diseño del estudio, el tipo de artículo, su área temática, el número de autores, el género, la afiliación, y la actividad del primer autor. Se calcularon medidas de tendencia central y dispersión así como frecuencias y proporciones, una prueba t de Student o U. de Mann Whitney fue aplicada según la distribución de la variable. Se calculó el índice de productividad de Lotka y el índice de transitoriedad. Resultados: se publicaron 170 artículos, el artículo original significó más de la mitad de la producción (62,9%) seguido del reporte de caso (17,1%). Los diseños de estudio más frecuentes fueron el de corte transversal (52,3%) y el diseño experimental in vitro (23,4%). Salud pública y epidemiología fueron los temas de interés predominantes con 56 (32,9%) trabajos. La afiliación del primer autor mostró una participación interna del 77,6% y externa del 22,4%; el autor con mayor número de publicaciones obtuvo un índice de Lotka de 1,4 (Concha SC), el índice de transitoriedad fue de 0,8 debido a que 84,7% de autores solo publicaron en una ocasión. Conclusiones: la revista Ustasalud ha divulgado gran cantidad de estudios que en su mayoría corresponden a productos realizados por estudiantes y docentes vinculados con la Universidad Santo Tomás TRENDS IN USTASALUD JOURNAL FROM 2002 TO 2014: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSISObjective: to analyze all papers published in Ustasalud journal since mid 2002 to the first semester of 2014. Methods: a descriptive bibliometric analysis including all articles published in the 24 issues of Ustasalud were reviewed. Study design, type of article, subject area, number of authors, and gender, affiliation, and activity of the first author were determined. Measures of central tendency and dispersion as well as frequencies and proportions were calculated; a Student's t test or Mann-Whitney U was applied according to the distribution of the variable. The productivity and isolation index were established. Results: 170 papers were published, it was found that more than half of the production (62.9%) was original papers followed by theme review articles (13.5%). The most common study designs were cross-sectional (52.3%) followed by experimental In vitro design (23.4%). Public health and Epidemiology were the main themes of interest with 56 (32.9%) papers. The affiliation of the first author showed that most authors (77.6%) belonged to the Universidad Santo Tomás and 22.4% was affiliated with external institutions. Checklist for Reporting Results Using Observational Descriptive Studies as Research Designs: The MInCir Initiative

SUMMARY:Observational and descriptive studies (ODS) represent between 70 % and 80 % of the designs utilized in biomedical publications of the different scientific journals. Despite this, there are no tools to guide writers and to assist reviewers in reporting results with this type of research design. The aim of this study was to report the characteristics of a validated checklist for reporting the results using ODS as research designs in an English version. Two-stage study with qualitative methodology. In a first stage, a proposal was designed, by collecting items and domains from an extensive review of the literature. In the second, an instrument was developed by applying reduction items and domains through a panel of 45 experts comprised of clinical academics, reviewers and editors of biomedical journals, and experts in research methodology. These worked determining the validity of facade and content of the instrument. The items and domains incorporated into the final instrument were those in which over 80 % of agreement was achieved between the participants (36 of 45). In this way an instrument was created composed of 19 items, grouped into four domains. Characteristics of the design, construction and validation of a checklist that could help authors, reviewers and journal editors to write and review articles using ODS as research designs to report results was reported.
