In vitro effect of uremic serum on barrier function and inflammation in human colonocytes

Abstract: The results that were obtained from this model suggest that uremic serum per se does not seem to impair the integrity of intestinal epithelial cells. The increased IL-6 secretion by cells that were incubated with HD serum suggests a potential effect of uremia in the intestinal inflammatory response.

“…Vaziri et al firstly observed the significant decrease of TJPs in the colonic mucosa in vivo study with uremic rats ( 2 ). Then, other studies obtained similar results in an in vivo study with the patients with CKD ( 3 ) and an in vitro study with human colonocytes, which were incubated with the plasma from the patients with CKD ( 4 , 20 ). Moreover, the impairment of IBF has been reported to contribute to the progression of CKD and its complications ( 5 , 21 ).…”

“…21,22 A barrier in this public is the provision of time (usually 12 hours per week) for their hemodialysis treatment, which can be a limitation to diet flexibility and regular exercise. 23,24 This study shows that individuals spend much of their time (about 12 hours a week) with other renal patients and with the multiprofessional support team. Santos et al 25 from an ethnographic perspective approach the good impact of this assiduous frequency in the place where hemodialysis treatment is performed, which generates a relationship of affection and companionship.…”

“…Based on the study conducted by Andrade et al . and in the literature, it seems reasonable to suggest that uremia affects the intestinal epithelium by inducing the inflammatory process and compromising the intercellular junctions 8. However, little is known about intestinal epithelial dysfunction and CKD.…”
