Zinc alpha 2 glycoprotein as an early biomarker of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Introduction: Although microalbuminuria remains the gold standard for early detection of diabetic nephropathy (DN), it is not a sufficiently accurate predictor of DN risk. Thus, new biomarkers that would help to predict DN risk earlier and possibly prevent the occurrence of end-stage kidney disease are being investigated. Objective: To investigate the role of zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein (ZAG) as an early marker of DN in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) patients. Methods: 88 persons were included and classified into 4 gr… Show more

“…Limited cross‐sectional studies have suggested a relationship between plasma ZAG and eGFR in type 2 diabetes [25,26]. Consistently, we showed that higher plasma ZAG tertiles identified people who displayed reduced eGFR levels.…”

“…Elevated plasma ZAG levels were observed in HIV-infected adults with nonproteinuric CKD [15]. In type 2 diabetes, non-albuminuric individuals with renal hyperfiltration displayed greater levels of ZAG than those with normal kidney function [16,17]. A proteomics analysis of people with type 2 diabetes showed a trend of higher urinary ZAG levels in non-albuminuric CKD compared with classic CKD [18].…”

“…Zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein (ZAZG) is a single-chain polypeptide secreted in various body fluids, such as serum and urine. Despite the fact that functions of ZAZG still remain unknown, some reports suggest that ZAZG has a lot of important functions in the human body, including fertilization and lipid mobilization, therefore it is considered as a multidisciplinary protein [86,87]. As its structural organization and folding characteristics are similar to the MHC class I antigen-presenting molecule, it may have a biological role in the immune response.…”

“…As its structural organization and folding characteristics are similar to the MHC class I antigen-presenting molecule, it may have a biological role in the immune response. ZAZG is used as a tumor biomarker for various carcinomas [87]. However, some immunohistochemical analyses have shown predominant expression in the kidney tubules of the human [88].…”
