Em decorrência do COVID-19, os dois anos recentes foram de muitas lutas e inúmeras dificuldades; mas também, de muito aprendizado e conquistas. Uma delas, o terceiro volume do livro "Tópicos em Agroecologia", que será lançado em março de 2022, pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Agroecologia (PPGA) do Ifes -Campus de Alegre. Essa edição visa dar continuidade à brilhante iniciativa do Professor Otacílio José Passos Rangel, com a contribuição dos professores, alunos, ex-alunos e servidores técnico-administrativos do PPGA! O foco continua sendo a divulgação e a publicação da produção acadêmica e técnicocientífica aqui desenvolvida, além de oportunizar a participação de autores externos ao Programa em parceria com professores e alunos do PPGA. Entre outras obrigações, os agentes credenciadores, reguladores e de financiamento cobram publicações. Assim, nosso livro tem sido um importante veículo para esse fim e para o sucesso e difusão dos trabalhos aqui desenvolvidos. Além do contentamento de poder participar da equipe técnica que compõe a Comissão de Editoração do referido livro, tive outra feliz surpresa: ser convidado para, novamente, escrever o seu prefácio! Ainda mais ao saber que seria uma homenagem póstuma ao brilhante professor LUIZ CARLOS PINHEIRO MACHADO, pioneiro nos estudos em agroecologia no Brasil, que faleceu em 2 de julho do ano de 2020, véspera do dia em que completaria 92 anos. Dessa forma, foi com satisfação que acolhi o convite: pelo fato em si e, também, por mexer com memórias do meu passado universitáriotal qual no ano anterior quando a homenageada foi a Professora Ana Primavesi. Tive a sorte de conhecer o Prof. Pinheiro Machado quando cursava Agronomia na Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV). Por ser militante político, um dos destaques em sua história, considerando que se vivia a ditadura militar, sua visita trazia bastante expectativa entre os estudantes. Tive a oportunidade de assistir sua brilhante palestra: entre muitos assuntos, todos importantes e tratados de forma bastante espontânea, o Pastoreio Racional Voisin (PRV) muito me impressionou.Nessa época, a propriedade de meus pais possuía apenas oito (8) "mangas", cada qual com aproximadamente 30 ha. No ano seguinte, 1981, formei-me e começo a trabalhar nessa propriedade, em Castelo, ES. Uma das minhas primeiras iniciativas foi a adoção do referido modelo, com resultados surpreendentes na produção de leite e carne, via aumento do número de animais e nos ganhos em produtividade. Sua influência não parou por aí: duas décadas depois, quando começo a lecionar passei a usar, involuntariamente, a mão esquerda no bolso: hábito do Prof. Pinheiro Machado.Para aqueles que não conhecem a história e a obra desse brilhante professor brasileiro, bem como sua importância para a agropecuária e a agroecologia, segue um pequeno resumo de sua biografia: extraído, resumido e modificado de textos acadêmicos e do Portal da Embrapa, do Escavador, do MST do RS, da UFSC, do Confea, da Revista/cadernos da Aba-agroecologia, do Agroemdia, do CREA, da brasildefators.com...

DNA fingerprinting based on SSR amplification profiles was applied to native species of Piper from the Atlantic Forest to compare the utility of this type of molecular marker with the morphological characters traditionally applied in Piper taxonomy and identification. Fifty-one SSR markers developed for four species of Piper native to Asia and Mesoamerica were applied to 16 species, together with 63 morphological characters, for species characterization. Molecular and morphological data were analysed by cluster analysis, followed by a cluster sharpness test and the construction of a heat map to visualize the association of characters with species groups. A multivariate regression tree determined the number of loci needed for species identification. Forty-five primers were transferable to at least four species. Molecular data were more efficient in detecting sharp groups than morphological data. Species groups delimited by a set of shared morphological characters were differentiated based on molecular data. The sixteen studied species could be separated by nine primers, demonstrating the cross-species transferability of SSR markers and the usefulness of DNA fingerprinting for both the delimitation and the identification of species of Piper.

The scarcity of information on anurans to many areas makes it difficult to delimit new conservation areas with higher relevance to the taxa, and therefore, knowledge of community composition and the study of ecological specialties are of fundamental importance for the conservation of the biodiversity. We studied the anuran community of Mata das Flores State Park (MFSP), located in the municipality of Castelo, Espírito Santo state, Southeastern Brazil, evaluating the richness, composition, abundance, and distribution of anurans species. We sampled the MFSP from March/2017 to January/2018, with four occasions during this time period. We performed sampling at night in six plots of 250 meters distributed along the MFSP area, three plots in flooded environments and three plots in forest environments. We sampled the anurans using the active search method, with visual and auditory sampling. During each transect, the plot was surveyed by two observers. We recorded 226 individuals from 18 species of anurans, distributed in six families. The composition and abundance of the anuran species differed between the plots located near the flooded areas and those located in forest areas of the MFSP. Our study is the first to provide data from the MFSP anuran community and our results point to a worrying scenario for the biodiversity of the area, due to the diverse anthropic impacts and presence of the exotic species Lithobates catesbeianus. The Park is an important forest fragment, being continuous to the ecological corridor Pedra Azul-Forno Grande, but it is the conservation unit that suffers the most impacts due to its proximity to urban areas. Thus, long-term studies are necessary, mainly to quantify and evaluate the effects of these impacts on local fauna.
