The Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia State, Brazil, has high levels of diversity and vascular plant endemism. There have been few floristic surveys of the mountain forests there, however, especially those focusing on herbs and canopy plants, with studies of Atlantic Forest epiphytes having been limited to the southern and southeastern region of that country. The present study therefore surveyed the epiphytic angiosperms in the Serra das Lontras National Park (SLNP), the distribution of their species among genera and families, and their biogeographical patterns. Fieldwork was performed between February 2011 and March 2012. Collections were made along roads and trails and phorophytes were occasionally climbed and fallen trees and branches examined in order to sample canopy species. The study site demonstrated high epiphyte richness (256 spp.), one of the highest recorded in the Atlantic Forest. The richest families are Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Araceae, reaffirming the patterns reported in previous major reviews on epiphytes. The species exhibit high degrees of endemism (45%) to the Atlantic Forest, especially among the Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae. One new occurrence to Brazil, four to the Atlantic Forest and 30 to Bahia state are registered. The SLNP shares more species with areas of southern and southeastern Brazil than with other northeastern states. Estudos com epífitas estã o concentrados principalmente em á reas do Sul e Sudeste do Brasil. Desta forma, o presente estudo realizou o levantamento das angiospermas epífitas do Parque Nacional da Serra das Lontras (PNSL) e verificou a distribuiçã o das espécies pelas famílias e gêneros e seus padrõ es biogeográ ficos. As coletas foram realizadas entre fevereiro de 2011 e março de 2012 nas trilhas e estradas de acesso. Alguns foró fitos foram escalados e á rvores e ramos caídos foram examinados com o intuito de coletar espécies restritas ao dossel. A á rea de estudo apresentou alta diversidade de epífitas (256 spp.), uma das maiores já registradas para a Floresta Atlâ ntica. RESUMO -Neste estudo, o objetivo foi avaliar as diferenças entre a riqueza e a diversidade epifítica sobre os forófitos de licuri, Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Beec., e outras espécies da Caatinga, bem como verificar a maior frequência das epífitas sobre os estratos de S. coronata. O estudo foi realizado no Parque Nacional do Vale do Catimbau, em Pernambuco. Foram selecionados, aleatoriamente, 50 indivíduos adultos de S. coronata (L), assim como o indivíduo arbóreo adulto mais próximo de cada S. coronata (O), excluindo-se os indivíduos de licuri, para contabilizar o número de indivíduos epifíticos por espécie e classificá-los quanto à forma de vida em hemepífitas primárias, hemepífitas secundárias, holoepífitas obrigatórias, holoepífitas facultativas e holoepífitas acidentais. Foram amostrados 760 indivíduos epifíticos distribuídos em 16 espécies, dos quais 15 táxons sobre S. coronata, principalmente encontrados na região da estipe recoberta pelos restos das bainhas das folhas antigas, e cinco no outro grupo forofítico. A diversidade de Shannon-Weaver (L -1,936; O -0,155) foi significativamente maior sobre S. coronata quando comparada com aquela observada sobre as outras espécies forofíticas. A análise de dissimilaridade florística das espécies epífitas em razão dos dois tipos de forófitos (L e O) apontou a formação de agrupamentos mais consistentes entre os indivíduos de S. coronata em relação às demais espécies. Além disso, considerando os tamanhos do diâmetro à altura do solo (DAS) e a altura, evidenciou-se que, quanto maiores esses parâmetros, maiores também a riqueza e abundância de indivíduos epifíticos. Assim, este estudo corrobora a importância desta espécie como hospedeira da riqueza e diversidade epifítica na Caatinga e para a conservação das populações de S. coronata.Palavras-chave: Epifitismo; PARNA do Catimbau; Arecaceae. Epiphytic ferns in swamp forest remnants of the coastal plain of southern Brazil: latitudinal effects on the plant community

Community structure and spatial distribution of epiphytic ferns in swamp forest remnants along the coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed. A total of 440 trees were sampled in fi fty-seven 10 x 10 m plots. Each phorophyte was divided into fi ve ecological zones (strata), where all species of epiphytic ferns were recorded. A total of 34 species representing 18 genera in six families were recorded. Polypodiaceae was the most represented family with 17 species, and Microgramma vacciniifolia had the highest epiphytic importance value. Characteristic holoepiphyte was the predominant ecological category, representing 70 % of the species. Ordination analysis showed a gradual change in fl oristic composition between ecological zones with richness diff ering signifi cantly between strata. We observed that with increasing latitude there was a decrease in mean temperature and total rainfall, but an increase in frosts. Th ese climatic and phytogeography changes result in a reduction in species richness and a change in the structure of epiphytic fern communities in a north-to-south direction. Th e importance of swamp forest remnants of the coastal plain to the diversity of epiphytic ferns is discussed.
