Delimitation of the Alcantarea extensa complex (Bromeliaceae) and a new species from Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: The species complex related to Alcantarea extensa is presented and delimited as: A. extensa, A. vinicolor, A. burle-marxii, A. turgida, A. distractila, A. lurida, A. simplicisticha, A. nigripetala, A. mucilaginosa, and A. trepida. Alcantarea trepida, known from Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil, is described as new, and illustrated. It is compared to A. extensa, A. simplicisticha, and A. vinicolor from which it differs by the robust, erect, compound inflorescence with more numerous flowers and by the… Show more

“…It is important to mention that a common phenomenon on inselbergs in southeastern Brazil is the widespread occurrence of species displaying a wide spectrum of morphological variation, which can cause extreme difficulties in their taxonomic treatment (Mello-Silva 2004;Versieux & Wanderley 2010). Highly variable (polymorphic) species, whose variation is partly correlated with ecology and geography, are called ochlospecies (Cronk 1998).…”

“…Major collecting efforts have been made recently, but many regions are still unexplored. Recent studies of inselbergs and forest from the area have led to the description of several narrowly endemic species (Kollmann 2008;Leme et al 2008;Leme & Kollmann 2009;Versieux & Wanderley 2010;Silva et al 2014;Goldenberg & Kollmann 2015;Meyer et al 2016;Campos-Rocha et al 2018;Meyer et al 2018;Chautems et al 2019).…”

“…The inselbergs of southeastern Brazil have been recognized as one of the three top hotspots of the inselberg plant diversity, by their species richness and the high level of endemism (Porembski 2007). Several endemic species of other plant families have been recently described for these dry seasonal forest remnants (Versieux & Wanderley 2010;Leme et al 2010;Goldenberg et al 2012).…”
