Reconstructing the phylogenetic history of species in large taxonomic groups remains a challenge despite ever increasing access to molecular data. In subfamily Cercidoideae (Leguminosae), the large pantropical Bauhinia s.l. (~380 spp.) is never supported as monophyletic, but the generic boundaries and the number of genera that should be recognised remains a challenging taxonomic and phylogenetic question. Here we reconstruct the phylogeny of Bauhinia s.l. and related genera in the subfamily using sequences obtained from five loci (matK, trnL-F, Leafy, and two previously undetected duplicate copies of Legcyc), which we analyse individually and in a concatenated matrix (excluding Leafy). The individual and concatenated analyses generally support two distinct lineages in Bauhinia s.l.: (1) the Bauhinia clade, containing Bauhinia s.str., Brenierea, and Piliostigma; and (2) the Phanera clade, containing Barklya, Cheniella, Gigasiphon, Lasiobema, Lysiphyllum, Phanera s.str., Schnella, and Tylosema. Based on our analyses, we recognise 14 genera in Cercidoideae. We resurrect the genus Tournaya from Gigasiphon, and synonymise the Asian segregate genus Lasiobema back into Phanera s.str. Our analyses reveal a clear gene duplication event in CYCLOIDEA that is shared by all Cercidoideae excluding the sister lineage to the subfamily, Cercis, supporting recent hypotheses for a whole genome duplication in all Cercidoideae except this genus.

Historically, many authors of regional accounts of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) tribe Cercideae divided the caesalpinioid genus Bauhinia sens. lat. into several segregate genera including the genus Phanera. However, during the last fifty years, Bauhinia has more often been recognised as a broadly circumscribed taxon with Phanera reduced to a subgenus of Bauhinia sens. lat. The reinstatement of Phanera at generic rank based on molecular and morphological evidence has now been widely accepted, resulting in the need for new combinations in Phanera for many taxa described in Bauhinia. Some of those names have been published recently by other authors so here we make the necessary combinations for those taxa still lacking names in Phanera. In addition, we include all published Phanera binomials and trinomials here and to each assign a status of accepted name, synonym or excluded name. The recent reinstatement of the New World genus Schnella to which c. 40 Phanera species were moved transforms Phanera into a strictly Asian and Australasian taxon. Phanera can be distinguished from Bauhinia sens. str. and from Schnella by a combination of morphological characters, but the morphological boundary with another closely related Asiatic genus, Lasiobema is unclear and warrants further investigation. We present a table comparing morphological characters of Phanera, Schnella, Lasiobema and Bauhinia sens. str.

New combinations in Phanera (Leguminosae; Cercideae) from Brazil

Abstract: Twenty-nine new combinations and one new synonym are proposed in Phanera for species previously treated as Bauhinia. The occurrence of each species in Brazil is noted. The lectotypification of Bauhinia alata and B. radiata is proposed. Phanera alata is illustrated.
