Miscellaneous new species in the Brazilian Bromeliaceae

Abstract: From 1990 to 2006, 2,875 new angiosperm species were described in Brazil, including 280 new Bromeliaceae species. This publication rate is considered to be a useful indicator of floristic richness and also reveals the huge gaps in our knowledge of species that make up Brazilian biomes and the importance of taxonomy as a basic tool to assess biodiversity and conservation. The goal of modern taxonomists is in a race against time ordained by an unprecedented rate of global biodiversity loss, and therefore collabo… Show more

“…The inselbergs of southeastern Brazil have been recognized as one of the three top hotspots of the inselberg plant diversity, by their species richness and the high level of endemism (Porembski 2007). Several endemic species of other plant families have been recently described for these dry seasonal forest remnants (Versieux & Wanderley 2010;Leme et al 2010;Goldenberg et al 2012).…”

“…This study is the first report of these plant groups in semideciduous forests in Espírito Santo and takes part in the efforts for inventorying the flora in the lower Rio Santa Maria do Doce basin, a highly disturbed region where several new, endemic angiosperm species have been surprisingly recorded in the last 20 years (e.g., Assis 2003;Coelho et al 2006;Leme et al 2010;Pirani et al 2011). We not only expect to improve the knowledge about lycophytes and ferns in such an important region, but also support studies on plant diversity and conservation decisions in the Atlantic Forest hotspot.…”
