Show more

“…Angyalossy (2000, 2002) studied wood traits for several Brazilian regions and showed some trends. Barros et al (2006) observed some features characterizing an area of Atlantic Forest forma-tion. Bosio et al (2010) studied Miconia sellowiana wood occurring in three forest formations of Atlantic forest in Southern Brazil.…”

“…Many authors demonstrated that several wood features respond to abiotic conditions such as: variations in diameter, length and frequency of vessels (Carlquist 2001, Luchi 2004, Bosio et al 2010, Melo Júnior et al 2011; length and width of fiber walls (Luchi 2004); presence of growth rings Angyalossy 2000, Luchi 2004, Barros et al 2006). …”

“…Despite the floristic and phytosociological information on plant diversity (Nunes-Freitas 2004), morphological and anatomical data may also show the diversity patterns found in a given ecosystem and their adaptive potential (Barros et al 2006). Thus, the Cerrado may be considered to be quite diverse, because its species evolved under different selective pressures (Fowler and Duarte 1991), by adapting themselves to environments containing acidic, dystrophic soils, and prolonged dry periods (Castro et al 1999).…”

“…According to the studies of Alves and Angyalossy-Alfonso (2000), Barros et al (2006), Worbes (1989Worbes ( , 1999 of growth rings demarcated by marginal bands of axial parenchyma and fi ber zones were easier to observe in charcoals because of the large size of the cells. On the other side, marginal lines/bands of axial parenchyma and proximity of axial scalariform or reticulate parenchyma are not always easily observed.…”
