Flowers of Asclepiadoideae are notable for possessing numerous nectaries and elaborate coronas, where nectar can accumulate but is not necessarily produced. Given the complexity and importance of these structures for reproduction, this study aimed to analyze the ontogeny of the corona, the structure and position of nectaries and the histochemistry of the nectar of species of Asclepiadeae. Two types of coronas were observed: androecial [C(is)] and corolline (Ca). Th e development of the C(is)-type of corona initiates opposite the stamens in all species examined with the exception of Matelea in which it begins to develop as a ring around the fi lament tube. Despite their morphological variation, coronas typically originate from the androecium. A notable diff erence among the studied species was the location of the nectaries. Primarily, they are located in the stigmatic chamber, where nectar composed of carbohydrates and lipids is produced. A secondary location of nectaries found in species of Peplonia and Matelea is within the corona, where nectar is produced and stored, composed of carbohydrates and lipids in Peplonia and only carbohydrates in Matelea. Th e functional role of nectar is related to the location of its production since it is a resource for pollinators and inducers of pollen germination.

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a ontogenia do pericarpo de Temnadenia violacea (Vell.) Miers. O ovário é glabro, súpero, bicarpelar e de placentação sutural. Cada carpelo apresenta um único lóculo onde se dispõem vários óvulos inseridos em um tecido placentário bem desenvolvido. A parede do ovário é composta de epiderme externa, mesofilo ovariano e epiderme interna. O fruto é um folicário constituído de dois frutículos geminados, cilíndricos, alongados e lenhosos. Nesse estudo foram consideradas duas fases distintas de desenvolvimento: fruto jovem e fruto maduro. No fruto jovem, o epicarpo é unisseriado e o mesocarpo pode ser dividido em duas regiões distintas. O endocarpo é formado por células alongadas em seção transversal. No fruto maduro o epicarpo é recoberto por uma cutícula espessa e papilosa, no mesocarpo a última camada de células próximas ao endocarpo torna-se esclerificada e juntamente com as células do endocarpo formam o endocarpo funcional. No mesocarpo do fruto maduro foram observados laticíferos não articulados e ramificados, fibras lignificadas e fibras não lignificadas.

Asclepiads (Asclepiadoideae, Apocynaceae) have morphologically complex flowers with a wide range of secretory structures related to their defense and pollination. A striking feature of the flowers is the presence of a guide rail formed by staminal wings, which is related to the guidance of the pollinator to the pollinarium translator and the retention of the pollinium. Previous analyses of floral ontogeny in asclepiads detected the presence of a possible gland on the staminal wing during flower development. The goal of the present study was to verify the occurrence of a secretory structure on the staminal wing and its possible function through ontogenetic and histochemical analyses of the presumed gland. Staminal wings are formed early in developing flowers, and a gland is originated in the outer and inner margins of the guide rail in all species. This gland releases a secretion composed of mucilage and lipids, which likely assists in the introduction of the pollinator appendage into the narrow guide rail by lubricating the staminal wings. The gland degenerates before anthesis, increasing the space within the guide rail and enabling the introduction of the pollinarium. This new secretory structure may be present in floral buds of all asclepiads.
