A new Malaxis (Orchidaceae: Malaxidinae) from the Campos de Altitude of the Atlantic rainforest in southern Brazil

Malaxis ybytus is proposed as a new species from the wetlands of the Campos de Altitude of the Atlantic rainforest of south Brazil, Serra do Araçatuba\Papanduva mountain chain. It is described, illustrated, and compared with other similar species. The new species is similar to Malaxis cipoensis and Malaxis sertulifera, but it is recognised by its flat to slightly conduplicate leaves, densely congested inflorescence with small flowers bearing free lateral sepals and four foveas in the lip. Due to the high degree of endemism in this environment, the few collection records and the anthropic pressure in the region, we infer that the species is critically endangered (CR) based in criterium D of the IUCN.

This study aimed to provide the floristic survey of Onagraceae in Ceará state. The floristic study consisted of analyzing material deposited in the herbaria EAC, ESA, FUEL, HCDAL, HUEFS, HUVA, HVASF, INPA, K, MO, NY, P, RB, UFRN and US, as well as field work carried out between 2015 and 2017. In the study area, Onagraceae is represented by the genus Ludwigia, and seven species were recorded: L. erecta, L. helminthorrhiza, L. hyssopifolia, L. leptocarpa, L. nervosa, L. octovalvis and L. tomentosa. All seven species were also sampled in Conservation Units, with L. erecta recorded in six of them. L. erecta and L. helminthorrhiza have a broader distribution in the state. L. nervosa and L. tomentosa are indicated as new occurrences for Ceará, both with only one record in the south of the state, expanding their range in Northeastern Brazil. The information in this manuscript allows identification of Onagraceae representatives in Ceará state, through morphological descriptions, identification keys, taxonomic comments, illustrations, photographs and geographic distribution data.

Background: Global climate changes have caused temperature increases that can harm plant development, especially the initial growth and establishment of seedlings for the recovery of degraded areas. However, there are species in which these losses are attenuated when the seeds are thermo-primed to sublethal temperatures. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of seed heat conditioning on germination and initial growth of Ceiba glaziovii (Kuntze) K. Schum seedlings, an endemic species occurring in seasonally tropical dry forest in Brazil. Methods: Seeds of C. glaziovii were exposed to 70 oC for 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes as pre-germination treatments. The control did not undergo heat treatment. Germination variables, vegetative growth, survival rate and normal leaves were evaluated. Results: Thermo-priming negatively affected the germination proportion of C. glaziovii seeds with increasing exposure time. However, it significantly enhanced vegetative growth and seedling survival rate of this species after transplanting, without impairing the formation of normal leaves. Conclusions: Thermo-priming of seeds was found to produce more vigorous seedlings of Ceiba glaziovii.
