Environmental damage and public health threat caused by cemeteries: a proposal of ideal cemeteries for the growing urban sprawl

Abstract: Growing urban land development has led to a reduction in the space available for cemeteries and the juxtaposition of residential and cemeterial areas, further raising the polluting potential of the latter. The present case study sought to assess levels of physicochemical and microbiological contamination in the Central Cemetery of Marau (RS/Brazil), and propose vertical cemetery deployment as a way to reduce necroleachate-linked pollution impacts. The following information was collected from 43 additional rura… Show more

“…Rapid urbanisation and urban sprawl have severely impacted on the provision of land for burials. A change of method to burial such as vertical cemetery can help to ease the scarcity of land for burial in this city (Neckel, Costa Mario, Sabadin, & Bodah, 2017;Hariyono, 2015). Even though the issue of land shortage for burials can be addressed with the introduction of the vertical cemetery, this spatial solution is perhaps too drastic to be accepted by the public.…”

“…A few studies have put forward some serious problems worthy of attention. There have been many cases that highlighted the flaws of cemeteries which proven to bring hazard to the living condition of immediate communities as well as threats to human health (Neckel et al, 2017;Klaufus, 2016).…”

“…Cemeteries constitute some of the oldest and largest green and open spaces in the urban landscape [15][16][17]. Researchers agree that the cemetery is an important element of the urban infrastructure system [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…Based on land use, sources of groundwater contamination include leachate from municipal refuse dumpsite, industrial discharge (liquid waste), domestic waste, salt water intrusion, application of agricultural chemicals, oil spillage and pipeline vandalisation and geological formations (Majolagbe et al, 2011). The issues of necroleachate represent a matter of concern because groundwater can be contaminated by such as they are laden with bacteria, viruses, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) (Neckel et al, 2016), and heavy metals and other toxic substances resulting from the decay of coffin material (Spongberg & Becks, 2000;Jonker & Olivier, 2012). These may be transported from the graves through seepage and percolate into surrounding soils and from there they may leach into groundwater and become a potential health risk to the residents depending on the contaminated water for various uses.…”
