Skeleton pruning is a type of pruning that, by cutting lateral branches (plagiotropic), allows the reinvigoration of coffee plants through the renewal of productive branches. The crop response to this management may be affected by several factors, such as the trees age, crop practices and, mainly, the genotype. This study aimed to identify the Arabica coffee cultivars with greatest responsiveness to skeleton pruning and desirable productive and qualitative characteristics in a low‐altitude region. The experiment was conducted in northeastern São Paulo state, Brazil, at an altitude of 565 meters. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replicates, and the treatments consisted of 17 short‐stature Arabica coffee cultivars. On average, the responsiveness of the cultivars to pruning was 32% in the first year and 14% in the second year. The cultivars IAC Catuaí SH3, IAC Ouro Verde, IAC Obatã 4739, Tupi IAC 1669‐33, Catiguá MG1, Oeiras MG 6851, Pau‐Brasil MG1, Sacramento MG1, IPR 99, IPR 103 and Sabiá Tardio were responsive to skeleton pruning. Among these, Catiguá, Oeiras, Sacramento and Sabiá stood out with pruning responsiveness above 45%. The cultivars Obatã IAC 4739, Tupi IAC 1669‐33 and Catuaí SH3 stood out in terms of yield, with an average between 40 and 50 bags ha−1. In addition to high yields, the cultivar Obatã IAC 4739 obtained grains with higher weight and sieve 17. Skeleton pruning was found to be genotype‐dependent and emerged as a viable alternative for revitalizing Arabica coffee cultivars in low‐altitude regions.This article is protected by copyright. Leaf rust caused by Hemileia vastatrix Berk & Br. is the main disease that attack coffee plants all over the world. The disease causes 35-50% of yield loss in average in Brazil. The disease is present in all the countries that cultivate coffee (Coffea arabica L. and C. canephora L.). Resistance of coffee to leaf rust is the main method of disease control. But the great variability of the pathogen makes it very difficult. In the world and in Brazil there are more than 50 and 16 races of the pathogen, respectively. In Brazil there are seven research institutions that have been working with breeding programs against coffee leaf rust. The main source of resistance to coffee leaf rust used by all the research institutions in Brazil came from ‘Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro-CIFC’ in Oeiras, Portugal. They are: Híbrido de Timor (HdT) CIFC 832-1 and HdT CIFC 832 and HdT CIFC 2570. Crosses were made at CIFC with a variety Caturra and Vila Sarchi and sent to Brazil, Colombia and some countries of Central America and Caribean. The countries that received the germplasm of CIFC back crossed them with varieties Catuai and Mundo Novo. Crossing HdT with Caturra originated the group Catimor and HdT with Vila Sarchi the group Sarchimor. Other source of resistance to leaf rust came from Coffea canephora crossed with C. arabica originating the cultivar Icatu. But the great majority of the resistant cultivar came from Catimor and Sarchimor. More than 50 coffee varieties have been launched with resistance to the leaf rust in the last 40 years in Brazil. But only few of them remain with vertical resistance to all the races of H. vastatrix. Horizontal resistance is more common on C. canephora var. conilon and C. canephora var. robusta than in C. arabica. This revision has the purpose to relate to the scientific comunity the breeding programs against coffee leaf rust in Brazil.

The aim of this work was to validate markers linked to the SH3 gene of coffee leaf rust (CLR) resistance and use them in assisted selection. Initially, we validated the markers in genotypes already known to carry SH3. Next, we performed phenotype and genotype evaluation for resistance to CLR in coffee plants growing under field conditions. We used Arabica coffee progenies derived from BA-10, which carries the SH3 gene due to introgression of C. liberica. Three SCAR markers (SP-M16-SH3, BA-48-21O-f, and BA-124-12K-f) and one SSR marker (Sat244) linked to SH3 gene were used to amplify the coffee plants' DNA. Our assessments of markers validation in resistant genotypes, SP-M16-SH3 and BA-124-12K-f, were efficient to identify the SH3 gene. These two markers were used to evaluate the progenies derived from BA-10 and were significantly linked to the phenotype evaluations. The SP-M16-SH3 marker was more efficient, with the advantage of being codominant.
