IAC Catuaí SH3 - a dwarf Arabica coffee cultivar with leaf rust resistance and drought tolerance

Abstract: The cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 was developed by the pedigree method, from the recombination of the coffee tree H 2077-2-5-46, of the Catuaí Vermelho germplasm, with accession IAC 1110-8, from the exotic cultivar BA10. Cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 is high-yielding, resistant to coffee leaf rust and tolerant to drought.

“…Regarding the cup quality, the cultivar Catuaí SH3 showed prominent quality, corroborating results obtained by other experts (Fazuoli et al., 2019). In a region more favorable for cultivation (1000 m altitude), Catiguá also expressed high beverage quality (Chalfoun et al., 2013).…”

“…The valuable germplasm forwarded by the CIFC was used in various hybridizations by the IAC (Bettencourt & Fazuoli, 2008) Finally, in 2016, IAC launched the IAC Catuaí S H 3 cultivar, with vertical resistance to coffee leaf rust. The cultivar comes from the introgression of the S H 3 gene of C. liberica, present in the BA 10 accession, from India, used in hybridizations with the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 46 (Fazuoli et al, 2019). In addition to being resistant to all races of the fungus identified in Brazil so far, the cultivar has a good level of tolerance to water deficit.…”

“…IAC Catuaí SH3 and IPR 105 are Brazilian cultivars highly resistant to rust, derived from BA-10 (Sera et al 2010, Fazuoli et al 2019). However, although IPR 105 is reported as resistant to rust, probably due to the presence of SH3 (Sera et al 2010), until the present study it had not been confirmed that this cultivar is a carrier of alleles associated with SH3.…”

“…The SH3 gene has been used in several breeding programs in Brazil, since this gene has not yet been overcome by the CLR races found in this country (Sera et al 2007). Recently, the C. arabica cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3, which has introgression of C. liberica and is highly resistant to CLR, was released by the Instituto Agronômico (IAC) (Fazuoli et al 2019).…”
