The embryo culture media in the era of epigenetics: is it time to go back to nature?

Abstract: This review is intended to draw attention to the importance of the culture media composition on the health of the embryos, fetuses, newborns, and adults derived from assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Although current research and industry trends are to use chemically defined media because of their suitability for manufacturing, commercialization, and regulatory purposes, compelling evidence indicates that those media fail to adequately account for the biological demands of early embryogenesis. Here, we… Show more

“…According to the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis [ 28 ], the differences in the environment during the preimplantation period in the two groups of animals can draw marks in the epigenome of the embryos, such as alterations in the DNA methylation patterns [ 29 ],whose consequences are expressed later in development. It is well known that the plasticity embryos lets them adapt to stressful conditions such as those derived from the in vitro culture, and it has been shown in mice that the long-term programming of postnatal development, growth, physiology, and behavior is affected irreversibly by preimplantation conditions [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…After ovulation the oocyte moves to the oviduct, where fertilization and early embryo development take place. Oviductal fluid is secreted by the oviduct and acts as an embryotropic culture media for the oocyte and early embryo for their time in residence ( 13 , 14 ). Addition of Se to in vitro fertilization cultures in animal models (cattle, dogs, pigs, yak, etc.)…”

“…Debido a los problemas que presenta el SFB en los medios de cultivo embrionario, se debe buscar otra alternativa para que los embriones producidos in vitro tengan un ambiente lo más fisiológico posible y para superar la baja eficiencia que tienen las técnicas de reproducción asistida (Coy et al, 2022). De esta manera, el ambiente al que se exponen en el laboratorio sería menos estresante.…”
