Effect of climate smart agricultural practices on food security among farming households in Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria

Abstract: Climate change brings a huge threat to the sustainability of food production and other livelihood activities in vulnerable areas like Nigeria, because it relies majorly on rain-fed agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of climate smart agricultural practices (CSAP) on food security of farming households in the Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria. A three-stage sampling technique was used to select ninety farming households, and a structured questionnaire to obtain information for the study. The c… Show more

“…Furthermore, some studies in this review used small sample sizes where the results of the studies may not be generalized; for instance, refs. [47,101,114]. It is worth noting that two studies from this review failed to report the prevalence rate of FI after data description and analyses [71,85].…”

“…For instance, [46,66,73,79,86,92] had food security lines of NGN 7967, NGN 1948, NGN 4219, NGN 2643, NGN 10,704, and NGN 20,132 respectively. Furthermore, [114] specified an FSL of NGN 2900 for their study that focused on the effects of climate-smart agricultural practices on food security among farming households in Kwara state, while [99] did not specify the FSL used in categorizing the households into food secure/food insecure households in their study. Furthermore, seven studies employed the FIES approach.…”

“…They primarily examined the increased yield effect resulting from the implementation of CSAPs. Existing studies (Wekesa et [53,1,4,41] examining the relationship between CSAPs and food security in Nigeria have often focused on broad assessments of agricultural practices without adequately disaggregating their effects on specific food security dimensions. Moreover, methodological limitations have constrained the ability to accurately estimate the impact of CSAPs on food security outcomes, particularly at the individual practice level.…”

“…Despite the importance of this issue, empirical studies examining the effect of CSAPs on food security dimensions among maize farmers in Southeast Nigeria are limited. Furthermore, existing research (Ani et al, 2021;Akinyemi et al, 2021;Adebisi et al, 2022; Oyetunde-Usman and Shee, 2023; and Kalu, & Mbanasor, 2023) [7,6,1,42,25] often overlooks the regressive influence of constraints and challenges on the adoption and implementation of CSAPs in Nigeria in general and Southeast in particular. Consequently, there is a pressing need for comprehensive empirical analysis that not only assesses the impact of CSAPs on food security but also identifies and addresses the barriers hindering their adoption and effectiveness.…”

“…The challenges faced by young farmers and the predominance of older farmers in the sector, as noted by Zulaikha et al [49], present additional complexities, influencing the sustainability of the agricultural sector and threatening food security. On a household level, sustainable agriculture practices have been positively linked to food security among farming households, contributing to national food security and development goals [50]. Allan et al [51] emphasize integrating local knowledge with experimental research as crucial for managing cropping systems and ensuring the sustainable development of agricultural systems.…”
