Chemical and physical properties of soil can be altered with the successive application of liquid swine manure (LSM), also known as slurry. Therefore, monitoring the impact of LSM is essential to an assessment of the potential agronomic and environmental benefits and risks associated with management practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of LSM on the chemical and physical attributes of soil under pasture (Cynodon spp.), located in southern Brazil. Four areas were sampled: three areas cultivated with Cynodon spp. pasture with successive applications of 200 m 3 ha -1 y -1 of LSM for three, eight and 15 years; and untreated native forest as a reference. The soil attributes evaluated were: organic carbon (OC), active (pH water) and potential acidity (H + Al + 3 ), nutrient availability (i.e., P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn), soil bulk density, macro, micro and total porosity. Successive applications of LSM on pasture reduced soil active acidity, and increased the soil organic C and plant-available N, P, Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn contents. These effects were more intense with time and in the shallowest layers, i.e. 0-10 cm.Excessive increases in P, Cu and Zn in the soil should be carefully monitored to minimize the contamination risks to soil, ground and surface waters. Soil physical attribute changes were more associated with land use (pasture versus native forest) than LSM use, and LSM applications induced slight improvements in the soil structural quality over time.

Soil water content (SWC) profile refers to the vertical distribution of volumetric SWC at a certain depth of soil concerning the plant water availability. The current study aimed to evaluate the vertically spatial distributions and temporal variations in SWC profiles under young and mature oil palm trees during the end period of the rainy season. Twenty couples of sensors were inserted into 5 cm soil depth intervals up to 100 cm. Each sensor pair was connected to the dielectric instrument to measure the electrical impedance (Z, in kÎ©) at each soil layer. The measured Z was then converted to the gravimetric SWC (Î¸g, in g.g-1) using an equation of Î¸g = 0.62.Z-0.2 found in our previous study. The gravimetric SWC data were then multiplied by soil bulk density for corresponding layers to get volumetric SWC (Î¸v, in cm3.cm-3). Results showed that soil water profiles' depths were 40 to 70 mm higher under mature than under young oil palm plantations during six weeks of measurements. The vertical distribution of soil bulk density could be why the spatiotemporal variability in water content profile. Looser layers throughout the young oil palm soil profile might cause a higher proportion of drainage pores and result in less water content compared to the denser layers under the mature oil palm.

Technological processes mediated by microorganisms and enzymes are promising alternatives for treatment of recalcitrant residues. Keratinases hydrolyze keratin, the primary component of some wastes generated in many industrial activities. The present study was designed to evaluate strategies for obtaining keratinases produced by fungi using submerged fermentation and two residues as substrates, chicken feathers and swine hair. Two fungi isolated from feather residues showed potential for keratinase production, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus sp. These were subjected to submerged fermentation using chicken feathers and swine hair prepared in three conditions (microbial concentration reduction, sterilization and hydrogen peroxide). The residual mass was quantified and tested for keratinase production. The most potent enzymatic extract was used in the precipitation technique with salts and organic solvents. The best results of enzymatic activity were obtained using F. oxysporum, on the 6thday of fermentation, obtaining 243.25 U mL −1 using sterilized swine hair as the substrate. Aspergillus sp. showed the highest keratinolytic activity on the 9thday, 113.50 U mL −1 using feathers as the substrate. The highest degradation percentage was 59.20% (w/w) in swine hair and the precipitation technique, with relative activities close to 50%. The results are promising for the application of residues and microorganisms in biotechnological processes of economic and environmental interest.
