Soil carbon and physical-mechanical properties after successive applications of swine and poultry organic waste

Abstract: In agricultural crops, the use of swine and poultry waste as organic fertilizers results in gains in the productivity and reduction of production costs, but it may also change the physical properties and mechanical behavior of the soil, either increasing or reducing its quality. This study aimed to investigate the influence of applying increasing doses of liquid swine manure (160 m³ ha-1 year-1, 320 m³ ha-1 year-1 and 480 m³ ha-1 year-1) and poultry litter (6 Mg ha-1 year-1, 12 Mg ha-1 year-1 and 18 Mg ha-1 ye… Show more

“…Cherubin et al (2015) also showed that the application of up to 80 m 3 ha -1 yr -1 of LSM in notillage areas did not reduce ρ b to levels similar to native forest. However, results reported by Freitas et al (2018), where the application of LSM up to a dosage of 480 m 3 ha -1 yr -1 , for four years in perennial pasture, reduced ρ b in the superficial layer.…”

“…Historically, LSM has been used as organic fertilizer, mainly as a source of N (Woli et al, 2013), in areas cultivated with pastures and annual crops (Freitas et al, 2018;Guardini et al, 2012;Oliveira et al, 2017). Successive applications of LSM, as organic fertilizer, enhance the growth and accumulation of dry matter biomass of Cynodon sp.…”

“…Variations in soil organic carbon could be related to differences in parent materials during soil formation or management systems applied to the soil. For example, the application of swine manure and poultry litter doses of up to 480 m 3 and 18 Mg ha -1 year -1 , respectively, significantly increased soil organic carbon followed by decreased soil density [22]. Decreases in soil bulk density would increase total porosity and macropores' proportion for the young plantation soil.…”

“…Brazil holds a prominent position in the meat production sector, generating enormous volumes of agroindustrial residues that consist primarily of keratin; these include chicken feathers and swine hair (Pond et al, 1991;Onifade et al, 1998;BAAP, 2018;Freitas et al, 2018). Keratins are complex proteins formed by α-helix and β-sheets structures.…”
