Background: Histopathological changes have been widely used as biomarkers in determining the effects of pollutants on fish. Leaves of Balanites aegyptiaca, a deep-rooted, evergreen or semi-deciduous, multi-branched, spiny tree have been reported to have pesticidal, anaesthetic and ichthyotoxic effects. This study sought to find out the effect of sub-lethal concentrations (5.00, 11.00, 21.00, 43.00, and 86.00 mg/L) of B. aegyptiaca on histopathology of gills, kidney, and liver of mixed-sex Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings Methods: A total of 120 O. niloticus fingerlings (mean weight 23±0.03 g and mean total length 12.50±0.39 cm) were exposed to aqueous crude leaves extract of B. aegyptiaca. The gills, kidney, and liver were excised and processed routinely for the elucidation of histopathological changes Results: Dose-dependent histopathological changes were observed in the three organs (gills, kidney and liver) of O. niloticus exposed to graded concentrations of B. aegyptiaca. Gills showed moderate to severe secondary lamellae fusion, desquamation, and primary lamellae congestion while the kidney displayed mild to severe renal tubular epithelial cell degeneration and necrosis as well as pigmentation of renal tissues. The liver showed varying degrees of histo-architectural alterations such as hepatocellular degeneration and necrosis, cellular infiltrations, kupffer cell proliferation, portal, and sinusoidal congestions Conclusion: Owing to these histological alterations in the gills, kidney, and liver observed in this study, prolonged exposure of fish to B. aegyptiaca should be discouraged to preserve fish diversity

Ikan mas (Cyprinus carpio) merupakan salah satu komoditas perikanan air tawar yang memiliki nilai ekonomis untuk dibudidayakan. Diperlukan benih yang berkualitas untuk dibudidayakan karena benih ikan mas biasanya didatangkan dari luar daerah. Metode pengangkutan pada benih ikan mas perlu diperhatikan untuk mengurangi tingkat resiko kematian. Dengan melalui proses pembiusan dapat menjadi upaya untuk menurunkan tingkat metabolisme yang dapat mempertahankan kualitas air dalam wadah pengangkutan sehingga akan menekan angka kematian. Salah satu bahan yang dapat digunakan yaitu minyak pohon teh (Melaleuca alternifolia) yang terdiri dari hidrokarbon terpene terutama monoterpen, seskuiterpen dan alkohol. Komponen Terpinen-4-ol, 1,8-cineole dan a-terpinol yang terkandung dalam minyak pohon teh (Melaleuca alternifolia) memiliki kemampuan menyebabkan efek anestesi pada ikan.Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 3-14 Juni 2021 di Mina Patriot Farm, Semarang, Jawa Tengah. Metode yang digunakan adalah eksperimen dengan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) menggunakan 4 perlakuan dengan 3 pengulangan. Perlakuan yang diberikan adalah penambahan minyak pohon teh dengan dosis A 0,00 ml/L, B 0,05 ml/L, C 0,10 ml/L dan D 0,15 ml/L. Jumlah sampel yang diuji yaitu 120 ekor benih ikan mas dengan kepadatan 5 ekor/1 liter air. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan minyak pohon teh (Melaleuca alternifolia) memberikan pengaruh nyata (P<0,05) terhadap lama waktu induksi, lama waktu sedatif dan profil darah. Hasil terbaik diperoleh pada perlakuan C 0,10 ml/L dengan masa induksi 16 menit 55 detik, masa sedative 4 menit 93 detik, presentase kelulushidupan 100% dan profil darah dalam batas normal.

Anesthetics have been important in ornamental fishes for transport and restriction of behaviors as well as for surgical applications and studies in science. Also, more economical and appropriate anesthetics can be common choice for these stiuations. In the study, a total of two hundred and fifty two zebrafish (forty two females and forty two males in each group) divided in three groups were studied as group A (Anise oil); group T (Thyme oil); group M (Mint oil). Anesthesia intake and lethal dose values were determined by following the anesthetic entry and recovery times. There was no anesthetic effect in group A, while anesthetic effects occured in groups T and M in concentrations 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 mg/l. Similarity was found in groups T and M in terms of anesthesia entry and recovery times (P>0.05). Nevertheless, no mortality occured in group M. However, 5mg/l tyme oil anesthesia was determined to cause 50% mortality in male fishes (group T). It was also observed that mint oil has an anesthetic effect on zebrafish with increasing doses determined by anesthesia entry and recorvery times (group M, P<0.05). Thereby, mint oil may be an alternative herbal anesthetic agent for zebrafish. However, further studies are neccessary to show the herbal anesthetics effect on ornamental fishes.
