Psychological abuse, such as verbal abuse, has received less attention than physical violence because of the manifested bodily harm caused by physical violence; however, verbal abuse has the highest percentage of violence worldwide. The consequences of verbal abuse in Saudi Arabia are similar to those in other countries. This study aims to determine the prevalence of verbal workplace violence in 12 months, the circumstances related to the event, and the consequences to both the attacker and the target person at all healthcare providers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional study included all healthcare providers registered with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties who had worked for more than one year in the health sector in Saudi Arabia by May 2019. The researchers distributed questionnaires to the participants via email. Descriptive statistics were used to represent the basic properties of the data. Correlations between categorically measured variables were explored using the chi-square test for independence. Overall, 7398 healthcare workers (HCWs) voluntarily participated in the study. Overall, 49.1% encountered verbal abuse. Those who worked in the private sector and in shifts, particularly evening shifts, were significantly exposed to verbal abuse. Furthermore, pharmacists, followed by physicians, had the highest prevalence of workplace violence. Workplace verbal violence is highly prevalent, making it a major concern. Patients and their relatives are mostly the offenders of HCWs. Psychological ordeal, increased overwork, and reduced work capacity are the consequences of verbal abuse. Most victims do not report verbal violence, and this may result in an incorrect estimation of the problem. Therefore, encouragement to report verbal violence and additional research in Saudi Arabia are required.

Introdução: Os profissionais de enfermagem, ao considerarem o processo relacionado às condições de trabalho, estão expostos a situações que podem desencadear estresse relacionado ao trabalho e síndrome de burnout. Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência e os fatores associados ao estresse relacionado ao trabalho e à síndrome de burnout entre profissionais de enfermagem atuantes em oncologia. Método: Estudo transversal realizado com 231 profissionais de enfermagem que atuavam em Centro de Alta Complexidade em Oncologia do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil. O estresse relacionado ao trabalho foi avaliado por meio da escala de estresse no trabalho e a síndrome de burnout pelo Maslach Burnout Inventory. A associação entre os desfechos e as variáveis independentes foi realizada por meio da Regressão de Poisson com variância robusta. Consideraram-se estatisticamente significativos valores de p<0,05. Resultados: A prevalência de estresse moderado/intenso relacionado ao trabalho foi de 75,8%, e de 38,9% para os profissionais que apresentaram síndrome de burnout. A idade, o histórico de acidente de trabalho e a agressão verbal e física estiveram positivamente associados ao estresse relacionado ao trabalho e à síndrome de burnout. Além disso, o estresse autorreferido foi fator de risco para essa síndrome. Conclusão: Observou-se alta prevalência de estresse relacionado ao trabalho e à síndrome de burnout, cujos desfechos estiveram associados à idade, ao histórico de acidente de trabalho e à violência laboral.

The "World Health Organization (WHO) defines workplace violence as, Incidents where staff are abused, threatened, or assaulted in circumstances related to their work, including commuting to and from work, involving an explicit or implicit challenge to their safety, well-being, or health." (WV) is listed as one of the world's leading causes of workplace disability, and is widespread in health settings in Arab countries and Iraq as well. Nursing staff have the highest recorded incidence of interpersonal violence in Iraq, posing a major concern for healthcare professionals. Different researchers concentrate on prevalence rates of violence against nurses in hospitals, addressing forms of violence, position and background of violence in the workplace. Thus, some form of occupational violence has been encountered by most Iraqi nurses,that may contribute to harm and abuse and reduced job performance. Reports have described the impact of violence in the workplace on the employee satisfaction of nurses and patient safety, but few studies have been done about whether aggression in the workplace influences patient safety via employee satisfaction. Ultimately, abuse against nurses is perceived by the nursing community to be a dynamic and chronic workplace risk. In the health care sector, nurses are among the most abused staff. Nurses are too often subject to abuse, primarily from clients, relatives of patients, visitors and caregivers team. The purpose of this article is to review the violence against nurses and challenges work place.
