The inhabitants of the floodplain of the Mazagão River in the State of Amapá in the Brazilian Amazon have inherited from indigenous African and Cabocla cultures indications for the use and forms of preparation of medicinal plants to cure diseases of the body and spirit. This study aimed to perform an ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants used by the riparian community of the floodplains of the Mazagão River, in the State of Amapá. In this study, we chose semistructured interviews with socioeconomic, ethnopharmacological, and ethnobotanical aims. The collection of medicinal plants occurred during guided tours. The Use Value (UV), Informant Consensus Factor (ICF), Correction Factor (CF), and Fidelity level (FL) were calculated. There were 130 species of medicinal plants, distributed in 116 genera and 57 families; Fabaceae (16), Lamiaceae (14), Euphorbiaceae (7), and Arecaceae (6) include 33.33% of the total species sampled. All 95 native species of floodplain forests were previously described, and 35 are exotic species. The species with the highest UV (≥ 0.5) at the mouth of the Mazagão River were Carapa guianensis (0.91), Pentachlethra macroloba (0.83), Dalbergia subcymosa (0.77), Uncaria tomentosa (0.75), Otacanthus azureus (0.62), Virola surinamensis (0.62), Hura crepitans (0.58), Euterpe oleracea (0.56), and Arrabidaea chica (0.51). These species were also the ones that presented the highest ICF among the informants and 100% in FL for a specific therapeutic use. The study is comprised of 16 categories of therapeutic use, of which the majority of the plants used are related to diseases such as microbial infections (20.67%, 73 species), gastrointestinal disorders (13.31%), and inflammation (11.61%). The results showed that knowledge about the use of medicinal plants along the rivers and streams that form the mouth of the Mazagão River is evenly distributed. Most of the interviewees present diversified knowledge about the medicinal resources because they have a close relationship with the floodplain forest. Native species of this forest predominate among the most commonly used medicinal plants as subsidies for future pharmacological studies.

O trabalho tem por objetivo registrar a ocorrência de plantas nos quintais urbanos no bairro da Francilândia município de Abaetetuba, Pará analisando as categorias de uso dos vegetais e o valor de saliência cultural. Foram realizadas 40 entrevistas dialogadas direcionadas por questionários semiestruturados partindo de dois informantes principais utilizando-se o método de bola de neve. A identificação das espécies foi realizada por meio de comparação com exsicatas do Herbário Virtual da Flora e dos Fungos, além do uso de literaturas especializadas. Foi adotada a técnica de listagem livre com intuito utilizar o índice de saliência cultural para ranquear as espécies mais importantes. Foi possível identificar que este bairro tem sua composição dividida entre pessoas que são nativas do município que representam 35 %, e pessoas que são das ilhas de Abaetetuba representado 32,5 %, e todos os informantes denominaram a área que cerca sua casa de quintal. Registrou-se 85 espécies divididas nas categorias alimentícias, medicinais, ornamentais, místico, higiene, ambiência, onde a categoria mais representativa foi a alimentícia com 42 citações (46,7 %), a espécie mais citada e com maior índice de saliência foi o açaí com 23 citações e 0,48 respectivamente. A importância dos quintais urbanos para a população é evidente, pois em muitos casos é de onde se retira uma fonte de renda, moradia para os filhos e além de ser o ambiente mais agradável da casa. Tais fatos indicam a relevância dos quintais, estes devem ser preservados para assim se manter o conhecimento acerca do uso de plantas.

This study discusses the bioactive composition, supercritical fluid extraction and biological activities of Momordica charantia L. from the last five years. Numerous compounds that have been identified in the extracts of M. charantia, including phytosterols, terpenoids, fatty acids, phenolic compounds, phenolic acids and flavonoids were also discussed. Although, several studies reported the use of organic solvents in the extraction of these compounds, this review emphasized on supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), good selectivity, varied fractions in terms of mass yields and chemical composition obtained, in addition to providing a solvent-free extract. Moreover, the biological effects of M. charantia extracts, including their antidiabetic, neuroprotective, anti-obesogenic, antimalarial, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial and allelopathic activities, were discussed. These biological effects of the extracts of M. charantia can directly affect human health. The findings of this review are important, as they can guide future studies related to obtaining bioactive compounds from M. charantia and its applications.
