Urban tourist beach ecosystems provide the essential service of recreation. These ecosystems also support critical ecological functions where biodiversity conservation is not usually a priority. The sudden lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic created a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of human absence in these urbancoastal ecosystems. This study examined bioindicators from 29 urban tourist beaches in seven Latin-American countries and assesses their response to lockdown about some relevant anthropogenic stressors such as pollution, noise, human activities, and user density. The presence of animals and plants, as well as the intensity of stressors, were assessed through a standardized protocol during lockdown conditions. Additionally, the environmental conditions of the beaches before and during lockdown were qualitatively compared using multivariate non-parametric statistics. We found notable positive changes in biological components and a clear decrease in human stressors on almost all the beaches. Dune vegetation increased on most sites. Similarly, high burrow densities of ghost crabs were observed on beaches, except those where cleaning activity persisted. Because of the lockdown, there was an exceptionally low frequency of beach users, which in turn reduced litter, noise and unnatural odors. The observed patterns suggest that tourist beaches can be restored to natural settings relatively quickly. We propose several indicators to measure changes in beaches once lockdown is relaxed. Adequate conservation strategies will render the recreational service of tourist beaches more environmental-friendly.

The contamination of waterbodies is a worldwide concern due to the increasing urbanization and industrialization of the cities without good effluent management. Touristic cities can suffer with the number of people during high seasons periods, which can lead to an elevated use of natural resources and effluents discharges. Moreover, raining seasons, either high or low, can also play an important role in contaminating waterbodies once a dilution or concentration of contaminants may take place. The present study evaluated the water quality of the Tejereba River (Guarujá, Brazil) during the high season (January) and low season (March and May) in 2018. Reduction in water quality was observed in May, a month with low pluviosity and low tourism. The integrated data analysis (PCA) showed a positive correlation between the physicochemical parameters and the month of May, in which they were negatively correlated with pluviosity and the percentage of tourists. Despite the deterioration of water quality in May, no toxicity to Daphnia magna was observed. Our work showed that water quality (physicochemical and microbiological parameters), during the studied months, is more related to raining seasons than to the presence of tourists in Guarujá, Brazil.

O diagnóstico da percepção e a promoção da Educação Ambiental em zonas praiais são fundamentais diante da relevância desses ambientes. Devido às preocupações com a praia de Arpoeiras, uma área naturalmente frágil, o presente trabalho propôs uma estratégia de Educação Ambiental, a partir do levantamento de dados de moradores, comerciantes e frequentadores. Foi realizada a exposição de cartazes nos estabelecimentos e disponibilização de folders com QR code para os usuários da praia, página nas redes sociais e produção radiofônica. Foi possível notar a carência do público no que diz respeito ao conhecimento da conservação dos recursos naturais para a melhoria tanto do ambiente como para o bem-estar do cidadão.
