In the present day, organizations worldwide tend to structure their work around teams and workgroups 1 to perform more rapidly, flexibly, and adaptively (Kozlowski & Ilgen, 2006). The various applications of teams in organizations have led to an approach that emphasizes their nature as finalized systems and the emergence of a new focus dedicated to this issue: effectiveness (Mathieu, Maynard, Rapp, & Gilson, 2008). Because the effectiveness of teams matters for individual, organizational, and societal well-being, it is essential to study processes to promote it (Kozlowski & Ilgen, 2006). According to Bass (1999), changes in the marketplace and in the workforce led to a need to adopt a transformational leadership style. Background and Purpose Incorporating autonomy in teams has been an increasingly popular practice, but the mechanisms that make autonomous teams effective still need to be completely understood. Adopting a multidimensional approach to team effectiveness, the aim of this study was to analyse the mediating role of team members’ supportive behaviours in the relationship between team autonomy and team effectiveness (team performance, team viability, quality of group experience and team process improvement). Methods: This research adopts a group-level analysis with a sample of 90 teams of 40 organisations from different sectors. Regression analysis was used to analyse the data, namely the product of the coefficients method. Results A positive relationship between team autonomy and supportive behaviours, which, in turn, is positively related to the four criteria of team effectiveness, was found, suggesting that supportive behaviours are a team process that explains the relationship between team autonomy and team effectiveness. Conclusion This research enriches our knowledge of the antecedents of team effectiveness and explains the mechanisms through which team autonomy relates to team effectiveness, encouraging organisations to incorporate autonomy into teams’ design to enhance supportive behaviours and team effectiveness.

A liderança está presente na sociedade desde as civilizações antigas, mas sendo uma abordagem renovada e discutida como uma temática atual. Nessa perspectiva, diferentes abordagens têm sido apresentadas sobre a liderança, a qual pode ser considerada um fenômeno amplo e complexo. Diante do exposto, o presente ensaio teórico tem por objetivo descrever os estilos de liderança nas organizações. Observou-se na literatura que a abordagem dos estilos de liderança pode ser centrada nos líderes e nas relações. Na primeira abordagem, os líderes apresentam comportamentos e estilos de liderança autocrática, democrática e laissez-faire. Na segunda, os estilos de liderança mais conhecidos são: a liderança carismática, transacional e transformacional. Em síntese, o tema da liderança ocupa um lugar de destaque na compreensão interpessoal e grupal, de modo que o estilo da liderança pode impulsionar o desempenho individual dos liderados nas organizações. Abstract: Leadership is present in the literature since ancient civilizations, but being a renewed approach and discussed as a current theme. From this perspective, different approaches have been presented on leadership, which can be considered a broad and complex phenomenon. Given the above, this theoretical essay aims to analyze leadership styles in organizations. It was observed in the literature that the approach to leadership styles can be centered on leaders and relationships. In the first approach, leaders present autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles and behaviors. In the second, the most known leadership styles are: charismatic, transactional and transformational leadership. In summary, the topic of leadership occupies a prominent place in interpersonal and group understanding, so that the leadership style can boost the individual performance of those led in organizations.
