First study of food webs in a large glacial river: the trophic role of invasive trout

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the food webs structure of a large Patagonian river in two river sections (Upstream and Midstream) and to evaluate isotopic overlap between native and introduced species. We used stable isotope analyses of δ15N and δ13C and stomach content. The Upstream section had a more complex food webs structure with a greater richness of macroinvertebrates and fish species than Midstream. Upstream basal resources were dominated by filamentous algae. Lake Trout were found to have a hi… Show more

“…Generally, δ 13 C enrichment values increase by 0.05‰±0.063‰ with increases in δ 13 C levels. However, most research has shown that the average increase in δ 13 C enrichment value is 1‰-2.0‰, while the fractionation of δ 15 N enrichment value is 3.2‰-3.4‰ [24]. There was evidence that the δ 13 C value of POM in water was affected by pH, and the average δ 13 C value of POM was reported to -31.4‰ [25].…”

“…Stable isotope analysis is an important method to study the relationships within consumer food web [24]. The δ 15 N value of consumer is 3.4±1.1‰ higher than that of their food [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”
