Fish movement in an Atlantic Forest stream

Abstract: Given the importance of fish movement to the dynamics and maintenance of stream dwelling fish communities from the Atlantic Forest, we analysed patterns of fish movement in a coastal stream from Southeastern Brazil, using mark-recapture technique. Displacement distance of each species were presented and discussed considering seasonal (rainy and dry) and body size patterns. We marked 10 species along the stream and recaptured 440 (34.6%) of the 1,270 marked fishes. The species with significant number of upstrea… Show more

“…Migration can be motivated by a search for places with better conditions (Schlosser, ; Welcome, ). Upstream movements may be important for the reproduction and population maintenance of some species (Mazzoni & Iglesias‐Rios, ; Mazzoni, Pinto, Iglesias‐Rios, & Costa, ; Mazzoni, Schubart, & Iglesias‐Rios, ), say by avoiding predation. Reciprocal migration is believed to reflect the interplay of temporal variation in local conditions and spatial heterogeneity among sites (Holt & Fryxell, ).…”

“…Thus, not only the definition of patch but also that of its neighbourhood are critical for understanding metapopulation dynamics.Species-specific scale dependency on neighbourhood occupancy probably reflects species differences in movement pattern.A recent study on the movement capacity of Neotropical stream fishes(Mazzoni, Pinto, Iglesias-Rios, & Costa, 2018) showed that most individuals of Pimelodella lateristriga were residents. We found that the occupancy dynamics of P. gracilis respond to the occupancy state of sites within150 m, whereas L. friderici is sensitive to occupancy of sites within 50 m; see Bergerot, Hugueny, & Belliard, 2013 for a similar conclusion.…”
