Revision of Tympanopleura Eigenmann (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) with description of two new species

Abstract: The Neotropical catfish genus Tympanopleura, previously synonymized within Ageneiosus, is revalidated and included species are reviewed. Six species are recognized, two of which are described as new. Tympanopleura is distinguished from Ageneiosus by having an enlarged gas bladder not strongly encapsulated in bone; a prominent pseudotympanum consisting of an area on the side of the body devoid of epaxial musculature where the gas bladder contacts the internal coelomic wall; short, blunt head without greatly elo… Show more

“…The classification of families and subfamilies were presented in alphabetical order as consequence of incongruence between molecular and morphological phylogenetic proposes, or lack of resolution of relationships between them. Identification follows Géry (1960), Weitzman & Cobb (1975), Kullander (1986), Ploeg (1991), Vari (1992), Langeani (1996) All collect individuals and species were listed and quantified for each sampling site. The relative abundance in percentage was estimated for each site through the percentage of fish collected in each site in relation of the total collected.…”

“…Some species, particularly those of Ageneiosus Lacépède 1803, are commercially important. Auchenipterids are evolutionarily noteworthy due to the development of unique reproductive strategies involving elaborate courtship behaviours and distinctive sexual dimorphism including extreme modification of the male anal fin into a copulatory organ (von Ihering, ; Britski, ; Ferraris, ; Ferraris & Vari, ; Royero, ; Akama, ; Birindelli, ; Walsh et al ., ). Species of the family Auchenipteridae and Scoloplacidae are the only Neotropical Siluriformes documented to have internal fertilization (Nelson et al ., ).…”
