Speech pathologists and audiologists work with the provision of health care, and as such, are susceptible to burnout syndrome. The objective of this study was to discuss scientific studies of burnout syndrome in speech pathologists and audiologists. A search was conducted across electronic databases using the following keywords: “burnout syndrome” and “speech pathologists/ audiologists.” The search retrieved 11 articles addressing burnout in this occupational category. Prevalence estimates of burnout syndrome in speech pathologists varied widely across studies. The scarcity of the literature and high methodological variability prevented a deeper analysis of the topic. Future studies are encouraged to pay closer attention to occupational stress and mental health in speech pathologists and audiologists in order to provide these professionals with specialized care.

BACKGROUND: In the Republic of Serbia, to our knowledge, there has been no research dedicated to the professional stress faced by speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Since speech therapy belongs to the helping professions, SLPs might experience professional stress. OBJECTIVE: To examine the levels of professional stress in SLPs concerning sociodemographic characteristics and terms of the workplace. METHODS: The research was conducted online, using a questionnaire designed to determine professional stress in speech-language pathologists - Speech-Language Pathologist Stress Inventory. The voluntary sample consisted of 185 employed SLPs from the Republic of Serbia. The stress level was observed concerning marital status, years of working experience, age, educational degree, caseload size, job sector, job setting, type of patients’ diagnosis, and type of service which SLPs provide. RESULTS: The results showed that SLPs experience mild to moderate levels of professional stress and that there is a statistically significant difference in the stress level concerning years of working experience, age, job sector, and job setting. Applying Generalized Linear Mixed Model revealed that two-way interaction (Years of working experience * Marital status) and three-way interaction (Age * Job Setting * Type of patients’ diagnosis) dominated on the model. CONCLUSION: Since it is noted that SLPs are experiencing mild to moderate levels of professional stress, it is important to emphasize the need for adaptation of existing work terms as well as to provide additional support to speech therapists in order to improve their mental health.

Speech-language pathologists being the important component of the health care professionals arevulnerable to Burnout syndrome. This generated a necessity to come up with approaches to eradicate this burnout by providing compensations from the organizations and taking care of the well being, job satisfaction of the speech-language pathologists. Objective: To assess the burnout among Speech-language pathologists in clinical and academic setup.Methodology: A cross-sectional study was held in which speech-language pathologists (n= 133) completed an online survey with 15 questions related to Burnout. A self-designed questionnaire was developed with the help of expert opinion and literature review. Measures of ratings included custom-made attitudinal statements towards burnout by Speech-language pathologists.Results: The outcome demonstrates that 46.5% of Speech-language pathologists experience Burnout which suggests that there’s no substantial burnout among Speech-language pathologists in clinical and academic setup.Conclusion(s):Job contentment, pressure, and burnout were found to be attributed to several occupational aspects, comprising components of need, assistance, and reward. No prior surveys have analyzed the interaction between various components of a job, which might increase satisfaction or alleviate tension in SLPs.
