Assessment of pregnant, primiparous and postpartum women's knowledge about dental caries

Abstract: ObjectiveTo make a comparative assessment of primiparous and multiparous mothers' knowledge about dental caries, access to information and use of dental services during pregnancy. Methods Results The majority of patients received information on oral health (70%) (p=0.24), but only 42% sought dental care during pregnancy (p = 0.45). The interviewees considered caries (80%) (p=0.80), a communicable disease (64%) (p=0.29) arising due to inadequate brushing (60%) (p=0.37). Pregnant women considered a brush with s… Show more

“…It is important to include the mother's data in the child's treatment as she is the reference for the child in matters of health. Data such as mother's age at the time she gave birth to the child, her level of education, marital status, number of children, access to services, place where she lives, habits and maternal lifestyle, amongst others, need to be collected and evaluated 29 , as they could interfere with the child's oral condition 30 . It is a question of transmissibility, understood not only in the microbiological context but also, and more importantly, in the broad social, cultural and behavioral relationship of the complex etiology of caries disease 12 .…”

“…10,19,20 Thus, resistance to dental treatment overlaps with the scientific evidence that shows the benefits and low risks of dental treatment during pregnancy. 21,22 The present study emphasizes the importance of social factors in determining access to health care, as the socioeconomic characteristics of the cities analyzed were associated with the access of pregnant women to their first programmatic dental appointment. Consistent with this result, socioeconomic inequalities are associated with access to and use of dental services, 23 and lowincome pregnant women residing in smaller cities with lower human development indices receive fewer prenatal instructions.…”
