Published studies regarding Bichat fat pad focused, quite exclusively, on the implant of this adipose depot for different facial portions reconstruction. The regenerative components of Bichat fat pad were poorly investigated. The present study aimed to describe by an ultrastructural approach the Bichat fat pad, providing novel data at the ultrastructural and cellular level. This data sets improve the knowledge about the usefulness of the Bichat fat pad in regenerative and reconstructive surgery.Bichat fat pads were harvested form eight patients subjected to maxillofacial, dental and aesthetic surgeries. Biopsies were used for the isolation of mesenchymal cell compartment and for ultrastructural analysis. Respectively, Bichat fat pads were either digested and placed in culture for the characterization of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or were fixed in 2% glutaraldehyde and processed for transmission or scanning electron microscopy. Collected data showed very interesting features regarding the cellular composition of the Bichat fat pad and, in particular, experiments aimed to characterized the MSCs showed the presence of a sub-population of MSCs characterized by the expression of specific markers that allow to classify them as multilineage differentiating stress enduring cells. This data set allows to collect novel information about regenerative potential of Bichat fat pad that could explain the success of its employment in reconstructive and regenerative medicine.

A comunicação-bucosinusal (CBS) é descrita como um acesso direto entre o seio maxilar e a cavidade oral. Comumente, sua causa está relacionada às exodontias realizadas em regiões que possuem interferência com o seio maxilar, podendo também ser ocasionado por doença cística, infecções, tumores ou traumas. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste estudo é descrever o fechamento da fístula bucosinusal com a bola de bichat. Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura qualitativa com análise descritiva, desenvolvida mediante a estratégia de busca por meio dos DeCS: “corpo adiposo”, “fístula bucoantral” e “seio maxilar” em bases de dados eletrônicas como SciELO e PubMed. Estabeleceu-se o critério de inclusão, publicações nos idiomas português e inglês, com limite temporal dos últimos 12 anos. O tratamento da CBS deve ser imediato, para prevenir complicações e consequentemente obter-se um melhor prognóstico. Os agravos mais comuns desta comunicação são a sinusite maxilar, quando não tratado pode levar o desenvolvimento de sinusopatias. O tratamento de fechamento de fístula bucosinusal com a bola de bichat mostrou-se eficaz, de fácil execução e de bom prognóstico.

Bucosinusal communication is a complication that may occur in the transoperative period of upper molar extraction, in which the maxillary sinus ruptures. This complication can cause sinusitis, bone defects and other consequences, requiring treatment so that it is completely covered with the help of the oral mucosa of adjacent tissues. The adipose body of the cheek is popularly known as Bichat's ball, located laterally to the buccinator muscle and on the anterior border of the masseter muscle, and is often used as a graft to close intraoral defects, such as fistulas and oroantral communications. The use of the adipose body of the cheek to close the bucosinusal communication prevents food or salivary contamination in the region, which can lead to a bacterial infection. In view of the above, the objective of this study was to carry out a literature review on the use of the cheek fat pad for the treatment of oroantral communication. The research took place through a literature review of the narrative type, with a qualitative approach. Searches were carried out in the databases: Scielo, BVS, PubMed and selected articles in Portuguese and English with a temporal coverage from 2008 to 2021. It is concluded that the cheek fat pad has a versatile use in oral and maxillofacial surgery in terms of location and application, and can be used alone or in combination with other techniques.
