Knowledge, applicability and importance attributed by nursing undergraduates to communicative strategies

Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge, applicability and importance that nursing students attribute to therapeutic communicative strategies. Methods: This is a quantitative study (survey) with nursing undergraduates from a public institution. The online questionnaire by the SurveyMonkey tool, comprising the informed consent form and six questions, had its relevance, clarity and operability assessed by experts. Results: Of the 104 graduates, 50 participated in the study; the most well-known and applied strategy was Therapeutic Communication, followed by Ask-Tell-Ask, NURSE and Tell Me More; the least were PACIENTE and SPIKES. Most use the strategies they know best; all were considered important by at least 82% of the students. Conclusions: The partial knowledge and application of these strategies by the students contributes to reflect on the complexity of their teaching-learning process.

Treatment of tuberculosis infection (TBI) in people living with HIV/Aids (PLWHA) reduces the risk of tuberculosis disease (TBD), the main cause of death in this population. Recognizing the barriers related to the scale up of tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) can contribute to reorganization of health services for achieving TB elimination. This qualitative study aimed to understand the perception of specialized care health professionals of a capital city in Brazil about TPT for PLWHA. Between October 2020 and August 2022 ten physicians and four nurses working for more than six months in reference HIV/Aids services were interviewed. Interviews were guided by a script of previously validated, semi-structured questions. The audios were recorded, transcribed, and categorized based on Grounded Theory, and its analysis was anchored in the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism. Sampling was performed using theoretical saturation. The emerged central phenomenon “Facing challenges in the implementation of TPT in the light of scientific evidence” was supported by four categories:1) Demonstrating theoretical knowledge regarding TBI and its treatment guidelines; 2) Dealing with the complexities of guidelines adherence in the routine service; 3) Building bonds to overcome different challenges in the care of PLWHA; 4) Seeking strategies to facilitate adherence to the TPT guidelines service. Professionals faced challenges in implementing TPT due to structural obstacles in service, hesitation in establishing therapy, and the risk of adverse events when dealing with patients’ vulnerabilities, despite available scientific evidence, theoretical knowledge, and guidelines recommendations. They envisaged ideal conditions to adhere to the TPT guidelines in service, and seeked to mediate confrontations by strengthening their bond with patients through multidisciplinary interaction, teaching, and research.

Introduction: The lately years of scientific and technological development brought unnavigable benefits to the Medical and health fields, specifically. Nonetheless, it makes the biomedical model stronger and promoted dehumanization of care, breaking the confidence relationship between doctors and society. Medical professionalism pointed as a way to rescue this, has humanistic values with its essential constitutes. Goals: Through the teacher’s perspective, this work analyses how the art and medicine interaction can contribute to medical professionalism humanistic skills development. Methods: Descriptive exploratory qualitative research that adopts the online focal group's method and Bardin’s content analysis to collect data. Results: Twenty teachers in many pedagogical axes, disciplines, and teaching-learning levels participate voluntarily in this study. Four essential thematic categories are defined: Medicine: art and science; art and educational professionalism development; encounters and dialogical relations mediate by art at medical teaching: opportunities and challenges. Conclusions: It indicates the importance given by teachers to the use of art and perception of its applicability on teaching competencies development and expression to humanistic professional practices. Points the utilization of art at the researched school primarily as didactic-pedagogical resource, also to put individual ethical and humanistic approaches reflections, institutionalized or not, mainly at university teaching and extension contexts. The teachers notice the art potential to develop values onto professionalism: empathy, sensibility, ethics, and respect, as well as skills and communication, interaction, and ties abilities. Recognizes Medicine as Science and Art, fields that sustain the intersubjective acting between medic and patient, encounter to the higher expression of professionalism.
