Objective: This article investigates the discursive representations related to racism of Brazilian employers and human resource managers on hired immigrant workers. Theoretical framework: The socio-cognitive theory proposed by Van Dijk is presented together with studies on discursive representations of immigrants. Methodology: The qualitative research used semi-structured interviews with 12 employers in the cities of São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre. Data analysis was based on critical discourse analysis (CDA), on Van Dijk's socio cognitive approach. Results: The research showed that the employers' discourse is based on the assumptions that the immigrant workers: i) are more efficient than Brazilians; ii) subject themselves to any kind of work; iii) are destined for unqualified and hard work; iv) threaten Brazilians (different cultural identities; different community values; may be criminals; are disease spreaders); and v) are an economic burden. The Brazilian employer´s discourse maintains and perpetuates all the characteristics of the racist ideology and makes it difficult for immigrants to enter the Brazilian labour market, forging domination practices that favour social inequality. Originality: This study contributes to broaden the CDA scope of analysis when investigating employers and immigrants. It also dialogues and contributes to the literature in Brazil on CDA by specifically adopting Van Dijk's socio cognitive approach instead of the more adopted Fairclough perspective.

Life and work on the refugee journey are among the latest contemporary challenges that instigate to look and to research. In order to enhance the discussion, it was considered pertinent to pay attention to the experience of looking at the image. We took the woodcut Day and Night, art by Maurits Cornelius Escher, which alludes to the migratory movement of birds, because it also provokes the look, given the characteristics that the artist imprints on it. The concepts of smooth and striated space, by Deleuze and Guattari, imbricated in a reference regarding the refugee situation, were taken as the theoretical basis for the discussion. The conversation between image and theory broadened the look beyond bureaucratic, legal and statistical issues, often associated with studies about refugees and allowed pointing out relationships of continuity and coexistence in their ways of living and working. It is understood that, by provoking the experience of the look, the image can be captured, cut, reduced, enlarged, twisted, in an effort of meaning not necessarily obvious.

Professora voluntária do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Regional da mesma Universidade. RESUMOO artigo insere-se no rol de trabalhos que visam discutir a informalidade no cotidiano laboral de diaristas. Para tanto se apoia em dados obtidos por meio do uso da técnica da história oral analisando a percepção das diaristas acerca do seu trabalho, que não possui respaldo legal na Lei 5.859. As trabalhadoras aqui analisadas realizam um movimento pendular entre Luzimangues, bairro do município de Porto Nacional-TO para realizar atividades domésticas pagas em forma de diária em residências de famílias no município de Palmas, ambos no Estado do Tocantins. O objetivo é contribuir para a discussão teórica sobre as relações existentes entre o trabalho informal, o reconhecimento do ser social e a perspectiva dessas trabalhadoras para a velhice, bem como analisar dois aspectos relacionados ao desenvolvimento da informalidade em contextos distintos: a liberdade do trabalho informal e as expectativas dessas trabalhadoras de Palmas em relação a sua aposentadoria.
