Objective To determine the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in musicians. Materials and methods Electronic database searches and a manual search were performed. Qualitative and quantitative analysis including risk of bias was performed for studies that met the inclusion criteria. A meta‐analysis of proportions with a random effects model was performed, and heterogeneity was explored according to the moderating variable through subgroup analysis and metaregression. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE tool. Results A total of 13 articles were included for the meta‐analysis. Pooled prevalence estimate was 52.8% (CI 95%; 33.4%‐71.7%) for wind instruments, 53.9% (CI 95%; 42.4%‐65.2%) for string instruments and 53.9% (CI 95%; 23.5%‐82.7%) for string and wind instruments. The average time of use of the musical instrument explained 82.38%, the heterogeneity between the sizes of the effects observed in the analysis (R2 = 82.38%; P < .0001). For prevalence of TMD, the GRADE criteria were considered very low. Conclusion The overall combined prevalence of TMD in musicians was approximately 53.9%, and musicians who use their instruments daily and for a long period of time may have a higher prevalence of TMD. Clinical significance Due to the high prevalence of TMD in musicians, health professionals must be careful not to underestimate signs and symptoms and correctly diagnose these cases.

A articulação temporomandibular desenvolve funções essenciais, como fonação, mastigação, deglutição e respiração. As alterações e manifestações dolorosas da ATM podem ocorrer tanto no local, como em músculos e articulações que estão interligadas com a articulação, como da coluna cervical e cintura escapular. Sendo assim, o objetivo do estudo analisar os efeitos de um protocolo de tratamento fisioterapêutico na disfunção temporomandibular. Para isso, foi realizada avaliação fisioterapêutica, constituída por um questionário, exame físico e avaliação funcional. Os objetivos e evoluções mostraram estabelecimento de um protocolo de tratamento. A 1ª fase de tratamento objetivou a analgesia, por meio de técnicas de terapia manual e eletroterapia. A 2ª fase visou aumento de amplitude de movimento, com mobilizações e alongamentos, já a 3ª fase consistia em adaptação à nova prótese. Na reavaliação atestou-se melhoras nos itens “presença de zumbido, dores de cabeça frequentes, dores na face/pescoço, dor na mastigação, dor ao abrir a boca ao máximo, cansaço nos músculos e uso de placa interoclusal”, assim como melhora significativa no índice temporomandibular. Portanto, foi possível constatar que o protocolo terapêutico se mostrou eficiente para a paciente, sendo capaz de diminuir o quadro álgico e a tensão muscular, ganhando amplitude de movimento e funcionalidade. Ressalta-se a necessidade da atuação multidisciplinar para a reabilitação integral da paciente.

A combination of factors exposes musicians to neuro-musculoskeletal disorders, which lead to pain and damage. These involve overuse due to long playing hours, containing repetitive movements under stressful conditions, usually performed in an unnatural posture. Although the evoked disorders are usually non-traumatic, they may often lead to prolonged or even permanent damage. For instance, in upper string players, these include bursitis and tendinopathies of the shoulder muscles, tendonitis of the rotator cuff, injury at the tendon sheaths, medial or lateral epicondylitis (also known as tennis elbow), myofascial pain, and wrist tendonitis (also known as carpal tunnel syndrome, or De Quervein’s syndrome). In cases of intensive performance, a traumatic injury may result, requiring drastic means of intervention such as surgery. It should be pointed out that the upper body and upper extremities are the most commonly affected sites of playing musicians. This review provides a description of the playing-related motor disorders in performing musicians, and of the methodologies used to identify and evaluate these disorders, particularly for violinists and other upper string players.
