Age-related episodic memory decline and the role of amyloid-β: a systematic review

Abstract: Aging has been associated with the functional decline of episodic memory (EM). Unanswered questions are whether the decline of EM occurs even during healthy aging and whether this decline is related to amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition in the hippocampus. Objective: The main purpose of this study was to investigate data on the relationship between the age-related EM decline and Aβ deposition. Methods: We searched the Cochrane, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and reference lists of retrieved articles … Show more

“…In a very recent study, it has been discussed that delayed recall as a way of assessing episodic memory impairment is one of the most significant predictive factors in defining the progression of Alzheimer’s disease [ 36 ]. Regarding the population of adults with vascular aging, research thus far shows findings that tend to be consistent with a decline of episodic memory as well [ 40 , 41 ].…”

“…Memory is one of the most impacted cognitive functions during aging. Aging is accompanied by decline in processing speed, attention span, episodic recall ability and execution of different tasks [3][4][5] . Memory complaints in older individuals are more prevalent among women 6,7 .…”

“…A memória é uma das funções cognitivas mais afetadas durante o envelhecimento. Pode-se observar diminuição da velocidade de processamento, da capacidade de atenção, da capacidade de recordação episódica e de execução de diferentes tarefas com o envelhecer [3][4][5] . Entre pessoas idosas, queixas de memória são mais frequentes entre mulheres 6,7 .…”
