Refractory Ceramics of Clay and Alumina Waste

Abstract: Refractory ceramics were produced from clays and alumina waste. Specimens were shaped by uniaxial pressing, subjected to thermal analysis by dilatometry and heat-treated in a conventional furnace at 1300 and 1400ºC, applying a heating rate of 5ºC/min and a dwell time of 2 and 3 hours at the maximum temperature. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and physicomechanical properties. The dilatometric analysis before heat treatment indicated that the formula… Show more

“…We ascribed the results to the inertness of α-A1 2 O 3 and its difficulty to react with cristobalite for mullite formation. 1,7,17 Mullite ceramics could be fabricated through traditional sintering methods, 32 such as atmospheric pressure sintering, 24,33 microwave sintering, 34 etc. Compared with the conventional sintering methods, hot-press sintering (HPS) places the dry powder in a mold and heats it under uniaxial pressing.…”
