Study of Mechanical and Wear Behaviour of Hyper-Eutectic Al-Si Automotive Alloy Through Fe, Ni and Cr Addition

Abstract: Effect of Fe, Ni and Cr addition on the wear behavior of hyper-eutectic Al-Si automotive alloy has been studied. Dry sliding wear tests have been conducted using pin-on-disc wear testing machine under normal loads of 20N and constant sliding speed of 0.64 ms-1. Influence of Fe addition to the base alloy increases the wear rate due to the formation of needle beta intermetallics. Ni addition to the alloy does not impede formation of needle-like intermetallic compounds and has no positive effect on the modificati… Show more

“…It is also studied that additions of minor alloying elements such as Cu and Mg also make better the mechanical properties and make the alloy responsive to heat treatment [7]. In addition, the effect of Fe, Ni and Cr addition on the wear charcteristic of hyper-eutectic AlSi automotive alloy has been investigated [8]. Melt spinning process was introduced to study the rapid quenching process of Silumine with compositions in the range 0 at.…”

“…The α-Al(Fe,Mn)Si phase exhibits a body centered cubic structure and its preferred morphology is Chinese script. Kaisera, et al [12] presented the applications of this type of alloys. Hypereutectic aluminium-silicon alloys are used in applications that require high resistance to wear, corrosion, good mechanical properties, low thermal expansion and reduced density.…”

“…Kaiser, et al [12] studied mechanical and wear behavior of hyper-eutectic Al-Si automotive alloy through Fe, Ni and Cr Addition, they observed that Fe improves the hardness of the hypereutectic Al-Si automotive alloys due to formation of hard β-Al 5 FeSi phase, beside; Ni extends the hardness due to precipitation of Ni intermetallic into the aluminum matrix. The Fe bearing intermetallic ensues as stress raisers and points of weakness that reduce the tensile strength and ductility of the alloy, likewise, the addition of Cr change in their effectiveness to modify the harmful harder phase to α-Al(Fe,Cr)Si.…”
