TiO2 thin Films for Biofouling Applications

Abstract: This work presents a study of TiO 2 thin films prepared by sputtering, for using as protection for biofouling action on marine structures. Titanium oxide thin films were prepared with different amount of oxygen on the surface of regular 1020 steel, a structural material for marine technology. The cristalline structure analysis evidenced the formation of anatase and rutile phases, as well as an amorphous phase of titanium oxide. Roughness measurements shown that the surface finish can contribute to the fixation… Show more

“…17 TiO 2 was considered as an antifouling material, showing antibacterial activity by releasing reactive species after sunlight mediated UV exposure. 18 CaCO 3 -containing siliconized FR materials were also developed but were shown to exhibit mass loss when immersed in water due to the dissolution of CaCO 3 , leading to increase in roughness, which promoted macrofouling colonization. 19 Self-cleaning graphene containing silicone nanocomposite coatings have also been considered to fabricate FR materials.…”

“…2(a). To further enhance the antifouling effect by the UV-C radiation, the external surface of the quartz window was coated with a 50 nm-thin layer of transparent TiO 2 , which had been proved effective for biofouling control through photocatalytic oxide sterilization and biological adhesion reduction by enhanced hydrophobicity [48].…”
