Corrosion Behavior of API 5L X80 Steel in the Produced Water of Onshore Oil Recovery Facilities

Abstract: High-strength low-alloy steel is used in pipelines, which transport oil/gas and also produced water in the process of the secondary recovery of oil. This paper investigates the corrosion of X80 steel after immersion in static systems (biotic and abiotic). The corrosion rate, the corrosion morphology and the hardness of the coupons were investigated. The corrosion products were determined by SEM/EDS and XRD. The corrosion rates of the coupons in the biotic system were moderate and had an agressive pit morpholog… Show more

“…This behavior can be attributed to the formation of corrosion pits on the surface of the coupons induced by the microorganisms present in the produced water. Images showing pitting corrosion on API 5L X80 steel coupons with up to 60 days of exposure to the biotic system have been published 15 . The high density of pits induced by the physiological activity of SRB is a very important factor in the alteration of the plasticity of the X80 steel coupons.…”

“…The Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used to count the total anaerobic, acid-producing aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) 28 and the group's total aerobic and precipitating iron bacteria were quantified by the Colony Forming Unit (CFU) method 29,30 . This article is part of a series of studies, the quantification of planktonic microorganisms was published previously and it is shown in Table 2 31 .…”

“…Em tubulações aplicadas ao transporte de petróleo e gás é muito comum a utilização de aços de alta resistência e baixa liga, como é o caso do aço API 5L X80, que apesar de possuir alta resistência a esforços, boa tenacidade e boa soldabilidade, em função de uma combinação de baixo teor de carbono e processos termomecânicos de fabricação, apresenta susceptibilidade à corrosão, requisitando o uso de métodos protetivos eficientes durante sua aplicação [4,5].…”
