Synthesis, Microstructural Characterization and Microhardness of AlCoNi-SiC Composite Prepared by Mechanical Alloying

Abstract: Equiatomic AlCoNi alloy matrix were reinforced by the dispersion of SiC nanoparticles (SiCnp) using the mechanical alloying process. The metallic powders were milled for 10, 20 and 30 h and sintered at 1200 0C under vacuum. Through particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy investigations, the mechanically alloyed powders for 10 h were selected to be reinforced with SiCnp (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.%). The microstructural features, and improvement in microhardness and porosity of sin… Show more

“…Argon gas was passed at 1m bar pressure for 5 min through the lid before milling to maintain inert atmosphere. [31] Then the metal powders were pulverized at 300 rpm for 30 h. During milling, argon gas was admitted periodically once in 30min to exclude 22 the contact of air during milling and toluene was introduced to maintain wet conditions throughout the milling process.…”

“…One of the alternatives for obtaining materials is mechanical alloying procedure, by grinding in a ball mill, using a container, where the powders are repeatedly deformed, fractured and welded by collision of the balls, the result is the formation of homogeneous distribution of the reinforcing particles [4,5]. Mechanical alloying occurs in solid state, it has been possible to combine materials with different melting points [6,8]. Powder metallurgy allows to insert reinforcements the at high volume matrix, to consolidate the mechanical alloying process, grinding is required, followed by sintering process which binds the metallic particles at temperatures lower with regard to its melting point [9,10].…”
