Thermoplastic Elastomers Containing Zinc Oxide as Antimicrobial Additive Under Thermal Accelerated Ageing

Abstract: Styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymer-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are applied in the production of household items used in places with conditions for microbial development. Metal oxides like zinc oxide (ZnO) and others can be added to the TPE composition to prevent microbial growth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thermal accelerated ageing on mechanical, chemical and antibacterial properties of SEBS-based TPE containing 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% zinc oxide. Zinc oxide was cha… Show more

“…Such a method can be applied for preparation a wider products such as automotive body parts, plastic trinkets, cell phone cases, toys, containers, and water bottles. [85][86][87] Antimicrobial food packaging materials incorporated ZnO NPs can be divided into two types: bio-based nanocomposite and petroleum-based nanocomposite. The representative samples of antimicrobial food packaging are summarized in Table 3.…”

“…Nowadays, the antibacterial and antifouling properties of a material are very interesting as elastomers can be degraded by environmental agents, such as mechanical stress, heating/cooling, chemicals, and hydrolysis under working conditions, causing the polymer to be vulnerable to bacterial contaminations or infections, which are a severe threat to humans. Antibacterial refers to anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses their growth or their ability to reproduce, whereas antifouling systems can be determined as the surface treatment on a substrate to prevent contamination by unwanted organisms [89][90][91].…”

“…Of these, ZnO is considered the most promising safe and anti bacterial agent (Zhao et al, 2018). In addition to the bacterial properties, ZnO is frequently used as an agent of inorganic reinforcement in various polymers, with a view to improving the thermal properties, mechanical and chemical (Simões et al, 2017;Cetin et al, 2018). ZnO is often used in various polymeric films, for the manufacture of the active antimicrobial packaging (Naveed ul Haq et al, 2017).…”
