Effects of Methylcellulose on the Properties and Morphology of Polysulfone Membranes Prepared by Phase Inversion

Abstract: Polymer solutions of polysulfone (PSf) and methylcellulose (MC) in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) were used to prepare ultrafiltration membranes by the phase inversion technique via immersion precipitation. The effect of MC additive on the structure and performances of the membranes was studied. The obtained membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), equilibrium water content (EWC), water contact angle, porosity a… Show more

“…Pristine polysulfone DSC analysis does not reveal any thermal process at the experimented temperatures, while its thermogravimetric analysis shows thermal stability up to temperatures close to 550°C ( Figure S7). [40] Differential scanning calorimetry results for 1/PSU ( Figure S8) revealed an endothermic process at 75°C that can be attributed to transition between phase I to phase II of the confined solid. Reversely, an exothermic peak was found at temperatures close to 65°C that could correspond to return to phase I of complex 1.…”

“…The polymeric membranes have several advantages, and they have been used in various applications in industrial processes, such as in processes of separation, purification and fractionation of various industrial branches 3,7 . The main processes in which membranes are being used are microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (HI), dialysis (D), gas permeation (GP) and pervaporation (PV).…”
