Correlation between degree of crystallinity, morphology and mechanical properties of PPS/carbon fiber laminates

Abstract: The crystallization degree in semi-crystalline thermoplastics plays an important role in determining the final properties of structural composite material (e.g. toughness, stiffness and solvent resistance). The main purpose of this work is to study different induced degrees of crystallinity in carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites, by using three different cooling rates during hot compression molding processing (51%, 58% and 62% of crystallinity). In this study, the morphology, th… Show more

“…As Table illustrates, with increasing the cooling rate, a drop in X c [Figure (B)], slightly lower melting temperature [Figure (A)], an increase in γ phase proportion compared to α phase one [Figure (A)] and a slight increase in T g (at 15 °C/min) {the middle of peaks was considered as T g [Figure (A′)]} are also obvious. Higher cooling rate leads to less ordered polymer chains as a result of which T m has a downward trend . Higher cooling rate is said to be a motivator for producing more γ phase .…”

“…In addition, the percentage crystallinity, calculated from Eqn , slightly increases from 38.5% for neat LDPE to 39.6% for the 1.0 wt% LDPE/rGO nanocomposite. The improvement in the degree of crystallinity of the nanocomposites indicates that rGO also can serve as a nucleation agent in the LDPE matrix to enhance the thermal properties of the LDPE/rGO nanocomposites …”

“…The Scherrer method was applied to determine the crystallite size ( L ) through the application of the Debye–Scherrer equation (Eq. 1): L=βcosθ where λ is the wavelength of the X‐ray diffractometer in nanometers, β is the full‐width at half‐maximum of the main diffraction peak for PHB, arising from the (020) diffraction plane which corresponds to a 2 θ value of 13.8° , and K is a constant related to the crystallite format (in this case, K = 0.9) .…”
