Changes in tactical behavior during small-sided and conditioned games performed within a training session

Abstract: This study aimed to verify the acute effects of 3vs.3 soccer small-sided and conditioned games (SSCG) on the tactical behavior of youth soccer athletes within one training session. Twenty-four soccer athletes (U-13 and U-14 categories) from a professional club participated in the study. They played four 4-minute 3vs.3 SSCG with 4 minutes of passive recovery in-between. All SSCG were recorded and players’ tactical behavior was analyzed using the System of Tactical Assessment in Soccer. We compared the frequenci… Show more

“…For this reason, when adopting SSGs, it seems plausible to expect that players’ responses will be highly variable, as they can adapt their behavior to create novel contexts. For example, a recent study showed that players’ behavioral efficiency was higher in the last bout than in the first [ 42 ], which supports the rationale that different technical executions are likely to be observed over successive bouts (within-session variation). Also, the task constraints seem to indicate players’ preferable methods for solving the emerging problems [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…As previously reported in the literature, a higher width value in the numerical superiority conditions was expected due to the possibility of exploring the additional players' advantage through circulating the ball. 10 However, the results did not confirm this assumption, as there were no differences between the protocols. Previous studies demonstrated that teams tend to adopt a zonal defense focused on protecting the central corridor of the pitch when in numerical inferiority.…”

“…14 This instrument aims at assessing players' ability to solve emerging problems from both tactical (decision-making) and motor (technical execution) points of view. 14 However, previous studies emphasised offensive and defensive tactical behaviours 10,15,16 dedicating little attention to transition momentssuch as the counter-attack. In official matches, different studies reported data on players' actions and outcomes, [17][18][19] although there is no available data on how SSGs can be used to develop players' skills to deal with counter-attack contextual characteristics in soccer.…”

“…Indeed, previous studies have reported an association between tactical performance, specific motor skills, perceptual–cognitive–motor skills, and decision making effectiveness in athletic development [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Specifically, the small-sided games (SSGs) have contextual dynamics that improve individual and collective technical–tactical expertise in young football players [ 27 , 28 ]. During the game, it can be highlighted that: (i) most of the game’s actions happen without ball; (ii) technical skills may be enhanced or blinded by the tactical understanding or knowledge of each player; (iii) lacking tactical knowledge may limit the execution of technical skills [ 21 ].…”
