Objective: To investigate associations between quality of life, sex, age, burden, and nature of emotional support available in the family in older adults who are caregivers of older relatives. Method: Cross-sectional and correlational study on 148 caregivers gathered in public and private healthcare services, who were subjected to psychological measures of quality of life, burden, exchange of emotional support, sex, and age. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher’s exact test and path analyses (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 77% women, average age of 69.7 years. There were significant associations between exchange of support and burden due to the provided assistance, being a woman and satisfaction with the received support, satisfaction with the received support and burden, burden and quality of life, and satisfaction with the received support and feeling of burden due to the provided support. Conclusion: Satisfaction with the received emotional support moderate the association between sex and burden, and such moderate the association between satisfaction with emotional support and perceived quality of life.

Objective: to analyze the frequency of the “caregiver role strain” nursing diagnosis in informal caregivers for the elderly, the defining characteristics and the related factors. Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive study carried out with 99 informal caregivers for elderly residents living in the areas covered by five units of the Family Health Strategy of Cuiabá, Mato Grasso, Brazil. Data collect took place between July and September 2017, through home interviews. A questionnaire elaborated from the literature on the diagnosis A questionnaire elaborated from the literature on the diagnosis caregiver role strain established by NANDA-International taxonomy II was used. A descriptive analysis with relative and absolute frequency was accomplished. Results: the frequency of the “caregiver role stress” nursing diagnosis found in caregivers was 98.0%. The most common defining characteristics were: difficulty in seeing the care receiver with the disease (69.1%); apprehension about the future health of the care recipient (66.0%); apprehension about the welfare of the care recipient, if the caregiver is unable to offer it (61.9%); apprehension about the future ability to provide care (60.8%); apprehension about the possible institutionalization of the care recipient (55.7%); concern with the routine care (55.7%) and social isolation (51.5%). The related factors most frequently found were: duration of care (92.8%); 24-hour a day care responsibilities (75.3%); dependence (77.3%) and alteration in the cognitive function was (73.2%) in the elderly; physical conditions (73.2%) and codependency of the caregiver (61.9%). Conclusion: the frequency of the “caregiver role strain” nursing diagnosis found in this study is high, its defining characteristics concerning mainly the caregiver's apprehension with the elderly and the related factors refer to the demands of the care provided. The nurse and other team’s professionals must pay attention to the caregivers as well as to the elderly being cared of in the health units, helping them to overcome the difficulties involved in performing their role.

ResumoO gênero é considerado por muitos pesquisadores um fator que influencia a escolha do cuidador de idosos. Essa revisão narrativa visa refletir sobre a ação da cultura como agente determinante na escolha da mulher como responsável pelo cuidar. Este artigo preconiza a redefinição do critério de escolha dos cuidadores, de forma a estabelecer o papel de cuidar para o familiar mais apto a realizá-lo, não sendo o gênero o seu determinante. Espera-se reforçar a necessidade de desenvolvimento de políticas sociais direcionadas à mulher, considerando a sobrecarga que acomete o cuidador. Discute-se o valor social atribuído à atividade de cuidado e a importância de torná-la mais favorável a quem a exerce. Conclui-se que debater sobre a influência da cultura nessa atividade predominantemente feminina é uma tarefa ardilosa, porém necessária quando se visa melhorias para os envolvidos no contexto do cuidar. CARING FOR THE ELDERLY: A WOMEN'S ISSUE?Abstract Gender is considered for many researchers a factor that influences the elderly's caregiver choice. This narrative review aims to reflect about the culture as determinant agent of woman's choice as responsible for caring. This article recommends a review of the criteria for choosing caregivers, in order to establish the role of caring to the family member that is more capable to accomplish it, not being genre its major determinant. We reinforce the need for developing social policies focusing on women, considering the burden that affects caregivers. It is discussed the social value attributed to caring activity and the importance of making it more favorable to caregivers. It is concluded that debating on the influence of culture on this predominantly female activity is a complex task, but necessary when it is aimed improvements for those involved in the context of caring. CUIDAR DE ANCIANO: ¿UN ASUNTO DE MUJER?Resumen El género es considerado por muchos investigadores un factor que influye en la elección del cuidador de ancianos. Esta revisión narrativa pretende reflexionar sobre la acción de la cultura como agente determinante en la elección de la mujer como responsable por el cuidado. Este artículo preconiza la redefinición de los criterios de elección del cuidador de forma a establecer el papel del cuidador para el familiar más apto a realizarlo, no siendo el género determinante. Se espera reforzar la necesidad del desarrollo de políticas sociales dirigidas a la mujer, considerando la sobrecarga que acomete al cuidador. Se discute el valor social atribuido a la actividad de cuidado y a la importancia de tornarla más favorable a quien la ejerce. Debatir sobre la influencia de la cultura de esta actividad predominantemente femenina es una tarea difícil, más necesaria cuando se pretende mejoras para los participantes en el contexto de cuidar.
