OBJECTIVE To examine factors associated with perception of work ability in a nationally representative sample of Brazilians aged 50 years and over.METHODS We used data from 8,903 participants of the baseline survey of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil). The dependent variable was self-rated work ability (good or very good versus fair, poor, or very poor). Independent variables included factors that operate at the beginning, middle, and current stage of life. Multivariate analysis was based on prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) estimated by Poisson regression.RESULTS Good work ability was reported by 49% of \ participants (49.4% among men and 48.6% among women). Results of the multivariate analysis showed that, for both men and women, good work ability showed positive and statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) with good health up to 15 years of age (PR = 1.22 and 1.18 , respectively), educational level ≥ 8 years (PR = 1.19 and 1.21, respectively), and current good self-rated health (PR = 1.88 and 1.94, respectively). Negative associations were observed for current age (PR = 0.99 for each increase of one year among men and women), medical diagnosis of depression (PR = 0.70 for men and PR = 0.87 for women), and having one or more at least chronic diseases (PR = 0.88 for men and 0.91 for women). Only for men, positive associations for the age at which they started working (PR = 1.14 and 1.12 for 11–17 and ≥ 18 years, respectively) and living with a spouse (PR = 1.09) were found.CONCLUSIONS Work ability in older ages is built over the life course, particularly by the health conditions in childhood and adolescence, age at which men begin working, educational level, and health conditions in older ages. Policies aimed at increasing longevity in the labor market must take these factors into account.

PurposeUnderstanding self‐rated health in young people can help orient global health actions, especially in regions of social vulnerability. The present study analysed individual and contextual factors associated with self‐rated health in a sample of Brazilian adolescents.Design and MethodsCross‐sectional data from 1272 adolescents (aged 11–17; 48.5% of girls) in low human development index (HDI) neighbourhoods were analysed (HDI from 0.170 to 0.491). The outcome variable was self‐rated health. Independent variables relating to individual factors (biological sex, age and economic class) and lifestyle (physical activity, alcohol, tobacco consumption and nutritional state) were measured using standardised instruments. The socio‐environmental variables were measured using neighbourhood registered data where the adolescents studied. Multilevel regression was used to estimate the regression coefficients and their 95% confidence intervals (CI).ResultsGood self‐rated health prevalence was of 72.2%. Being male (B: −0.165; CI: −0.250 to −0.081), age (B: −0.040; CI: −0.073 to −0.007), weekly duration of moderate to vigorous physical activity (B: 0.074; CI: 0.048–0.099), body mass index (B: −0.025; CI: −0.036 to −0.015), number of family healthcare teams in the neighbourhood (B: 0.019; CI: 0.006–0.033) and dengue incidence (B: −0.001; CI: −0.002; −0.000) were factors associated with self‐rated health among students from vulnerable areas.Conclusions/Practical ImplicationsApproximately three in every 10 adolescents in areas of social vulnerability presented poor self‐rated health. This fact was associated with biological sex and age (individual factors), physical activity levels and BMI (lifestyle) and the number of family healthcare teams in the neighbourhood (contextual).

A questão da qualidade de vida associa-se quase de forma imediata à saúde. Para além dos fatores médicos, existem outros que afetam ou influenciam de forma determinante a saúde dos indivíduos. Esta influência é de tal forma, que se estima atualmente ser superior quando comparada com fatores que estão ao alcance da medicina. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar, por meio da bibliometria, quais são os determinantes da saúde de maior impacto na saúde da população. Para alcançar o objetivo foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa descritiva, com recurso ao método de análise bibliométrica (ferramenta estatística que possibilita recolher informação por meio de diversos indicadores para tratar essa informação), de forma a identificar os tipos de documentos encontrados na pesquisa, a distribuição pelo local de publicação, a identificação de periódicos, quais os determinantes da saúde identificados nos documentos e ano de publicação, quais os determinantes estudados, o método de pesquisa utilizado e as entidades/autores mais citados. Foi possível concluir que o foco de pesquisa (de acordo com os dados recolhidos) são os determinantes sociais da saúde, com os peritos a considerarem que estes são em grande parte responsáveis pela iniquidade no acesso aos cuidados de saúde.
